Tuesday - June 5, 2012 From the School This Week's Query What impact do I have on the world today? Notes from Sally There will not be an all-school assembly this Friday. There will be 5/6 and 7/8 talent shows this week. The 7/8 show will be Wednesday, June 6 in the theater from 2:00 - 3:15, and the 5/6 show will be Friday, June 8 in the Drama Studio from 1:30 - 3:15. Parents are welcome to attend. The 5/6 students will have their closing track meet on Thursday morning, June 7th beginning at 9:00 AM. Parents are welcome to come and watch. All PE ends this week; students should clean out their PE lockers and check the gym Lost and Found for missing items. The last day of school is Monday, June 11th. It is a full day, and dismissal will be at 3:20. The shuttle will run to Lower School, and there is aftercare. The 8th grade closing ceremony is that evening for families of the 8th graders. Parents of student in other grades are welcome to attend the closing assembly if you would like; it will be that day from 2:15 -3:15 PM. Middle School students with 4th grade siblings who wish to attend the Lower School graduation event that morning are welcome to do that; please coordinate arrangements with the homeroom teacher or advisor. As reported earlier in the spring, Lauren Phillips’ sixth grade class recently completed a unit exploring microfinance in sub-Saharan Africa. They participated in a contest to earn beads, which are then matched with money and given to a person who has applied for a micro loan. The class placed second in the contest, earning over 63,000 beads to help entrepreneurs in Africa. Great work! Yesterday afternoon the Middle School received our Green Ribbon School award. This is the first year of this award, which is given by the Department of Education to schools who have demonstrated energy efficiency, healthy school environments, and effective environmental and sustainability education. We are proud to be among the 78 schools recognized in this inaugural year! Thanks so much to all of our parent volunteers for your hard work this year! Special thanks to Middle School PA co-clerks Priscilla Cheng and Amin Abari, to our Tuesday Letter editors, to Shelley Schonberger and her volunteers for their work on the dance last Friday night, to our faithful volunteers at the parent desk in the office, to all who provided snacks for faculty meetings and helped us feel well taken care of, and to the grade reps, room parents, committee clerks, and other PA volunteers. We could not do it without you! I invite your comments about Middle School – please help us do our job better! I am especially interested in hearing from parents who were new this year about what would have been helpful for you to know in advance. Please send along your thoughts any time this summer. End of year reminders: This week we will be collecting laptops, library books, and hardbound textbooks. Yearbooks will be distributed on Thursday; students with missing library books or unpaid fines will not receive a yearbook until those are cleared. Final reports for the year will be posted on line by June 25th; watch for a newsflash announcing that they are available. Families who have not completed their emergency information or their household and student information or who have financial holds, missing library books, or missing laptop components will not have reports posted. Please be sure these items are taken care of. Summer reading lists for all students who will be in Middle School next year have been posted on the SFS website. Please note that each grade level has one or two required titles; the remainder of the lists are suggestions of books that students might enjoy. Our primary goal is that students keep reading over the summer! 8th graders are beginning to fill their time capsules, envelopes of letters and mementos that will be opened in the spring of their senior year. Parents - please consider writing a letter to be included in the time capsule. These can be sent to my attention in the Middle School office, or drop by when you are in school and deliver them. Time capsules will be open until the end of July. Homeroom and team placement for rising 5th, 6th, and 7th graders will be sent in early July. We will also post a list of supplies that students will need for next year on the website by mid-July. Final class placement information for 8th graders going on to the Upper School will be part of the comment in the final report card for math, science, and language. The Middle School Office will be open all summer, although Jen, Julia and I will take turns getting some vacation days in. Anne Kennedy and Michelle Parker do not work full time in the summer but will answer messages and email periodically. Always contact the main Middle School number if you need something right away. Do hang on to your white vehicle security cards for next year. Thanks for a great year, everyone! Best wishes to you all for a wonderful summer! Please keep your household and employment information up to date Please remember to submit changes to your household and employment information (address, emails, or phone numbers) as they occur including during the summer months. Log into the parent portal and click Update Household Information. The School wants to ensure that our database contains the most up-to-date contact information. Changes are automatically updated in the online directory, which is accessed through the parent portal. Updates must be received by August 15th for inclusion in the 2012-2013 print directory. If all your household information is currently up to date, no action is required on your part. PA Announcements Volunteers needed for Room and Team Parents The MS Parents Association is seeking volunteers to serve as room and team parents for the upcoming 2012-13 school year.
