Congratulations on your upcoming “graduation” from Sidwell Friends. We look
forward to sharing in the excitement of your child’s trip down the back
stairs of Zartman House next month.****

I write hoping to enlist your help in what has become a staple of our
year-end review process – the parent survey. We would very much like to
get some feedback on your experience working with us over the last two
years and ask that you take a few minutes to complete the survey linked
below. Your responses will remain anonymous and will be reviewed solely by
the staff of the College Counseling Office. Your honesty and candor will
be appreciated and undoubtedly helpful to us in our future work.****

Finally, I’d like to share three reading suggestions with you that I hope
you’ll find helpful and interesting. The first is a book published this
past year by the University of Chicago Press entitled, *The Thinking
Student’s Guide to College *by Andrew Roberts*. *The book includes a
number of very practical recommendations for being proactive and purposeful
in during one’s college years. Roberts, a professor at Northwestern
University, bases his suggestions on his experience as well as years of
research. Secondly, I recommend a book by Harvard professor Richard
Light, *Making the Most of College*. Professor Light details research done
at Harvard and offers a number of helpful suggestions about finding success
in and out of the classroom. Both books will prove to be valuable reads
for students and parents.****

The final piece is from a wonderful book by Bill Bryson entitled, *I am a
Stranger Here Myself. *Despite the title of the piece (“On Losing a Son –
to College”), I am sure the excerpt which I have attached to this message
will resonate strongly with many of you regardless of whether you have a
son or daughter. I’ve also posted the excerpt on our website in case you
are unable to open it. ****
