MARGARET CARLSON: “Newark Mayor Cory Booker took a giant step toward
the presidency on Sunday” when he called the Obama campaign ad
criticizing Mitt Romney’s tenure at Bain “nauseating.” To rise in
politics, “Booker can live without a friend (the president) -- but not
without a multimillionaire or two.” [Link]

PETER ORSZAG: As the smoothly scheduled increases in the U.S.
retirement age prove, “when policy makers enact measures carefully
designed to reduce the federal deficit in the future, most of them
happen. This is a good thing, since a combination of more stimulus
today and more deficit reduction enacted now to take effect later is

currency union stronger. “To protect the currency union from the
fallout, the remaining members will have to move very quickly toward
the economic and financial integration that has always been necessary

JAMES COPLAND: The Justice Department has avoided large-scale
prosecutions since it indicted Arthur Andersen for alleged
improprieties in Enron’s bookkeeping and the firm collapsed. But its
new approach, negotiating terms to avoid criminal trials, “does
something just as worrisome: It insinuates Justice Department career
bureaucrats into the day-to-day management of major American

THE EDITORS: What is the purpose of affirmative action in a nation in
which whites will soon cease to be a majority? Diversity remains a
worthy pursuit at elite universities; if the U.S. focuses on “the root
problem -- failing students trapped in failing public schools --
diversity goals at institutions further up the food chain will partly
resolve themselves.” [Link] And regarding calls to break up the big
U.S. banks, THE EDITORS write, “shrinking the banks, while satisfying a
populist itch, won't better-protect the financial system. . . . A
better approach is to change the economic incentive so there's a
penalty, not a reward, for bigness.” [Link]
