_WILLIAM PESEK_: Almost half of Asia's citizens earn less a day than the
cost of a tall Starbucks latte. “The region is struggling to raise living
standards at a time when costs of food, energy and health care are rising
faster than Europe's debt yields. . . . How we define poverty colors the
economic and political solutions to a problem that's far bigger than many

_PETER ORSZAG_: High incomes are more volatile than average to changes in
the business cycle. “High-earning households should be the ones most in
favor of aggressively boosting the economy in the short run -- and not just
out of benevolence.” [Link]

_CLIVE CROOK_: Francois Hollande must betray his supporters to save them.
The socialist program that his supporters are now celebrating in the streets
is already defunct. Yet if Hollande “insists on short-term fiscal
moderation, whether this is deemed a renegotiation of the fiscal pact or
merely a supplement to it, his election might help Europe.” [Link]

_EDWARD GLAESER_: Good news, consumers: “Incomes remain highest in the
large, well-educated coastal cities.” But affordable Sun Belt cities, which
are experiencing population growth, are also safe from decline. In fact,
“none of America’s diverse living styles is about to perish.” [Link]

_ALI SOUFAN_: The defense of Abd Al-Rahim al-Nashiri -- who engineered the
bombing of the U.S. Navy destroyer Cole in 2000 -- "has received a boost
from a surprising source: Jose Rodriguez, a former high-ranking CIA
official.” Thankfully, the prosecution has enough evidence to contradict
what Rodriguez says in his new book. [Link]

_THE EDITORS_: Even Paul Ryan agrees: “Don’t let banks use their customers'
money to do anything other than traditional banking.” Sounds like an
endorsement of the Volcker rule in the Dodd-Frank financial reform law.
[Link] And in Europe, _THE EDITORS_ write, “Greece's elections have
confirmed its role as the worst pupil in the euro-area class.” Germany must
rethink its insistence on austerity or watch Greece leave the euro.
