Tuesday - May 29, 2012 From the School This Week's Query How do I integrate Quaker values into my daily life? Notes from Sally The 5/6 orchestra and 6th grade chorus will give their spring concert on Thursday evening at 7 PM. It will be repeated for the assembly on Friday afternoon at 2:30. All are welcome for either performance. The final 5/6 math club meeting of the year is today. Fifth grade parents, we are looking forward to seeing you tomorrow afternoon at the Knighting Ceremony. The program begins at 2:40 in the theater and will finish at 3:15. This is an all-school assembly, so 6th, 7th and 8th graders will be in the audience as well. Following the ceremony there will be a 45-minute break before the Medieval Festival begins in the Meeting Room. Parents whose younger children are arriving on the shuttle from Lower School should meet them in the garage. Otherwise, students and families should use this break to pack belongings that are going home and either take them to your car or leave them in the homeroom (please do not leave backpacks in the halls around the Meeting Room.) This is also the time for students to change into their costumes. The festival begins at 4 PM. The last 7/8 dance will be held Friday night in the Dining Room from 7:30 - 10 PM. Eighth graders will be celebrated at dinner before the dance, beginning at 6:30. A reminder to all that the regular school dress code applies for the evening. 6th grade parents, we will see you next Monday afternoon for the World Expo. The program begins in the Meeting Room at 4 PM and then moves to the Middle School. This is a wonderful opportunity for students to showcase their academic work from the year! Parents will remember that the School has initiated a new concussion policy this spring. Baseline testing for all students currently enrolled in 6th, 7th, and 8th grade is taking place this spring during PE classes. This information will be held to be used in case of future injury. Questions should be directed to the Athletics Department. 8th grader Sam Blazes was one of the eight Middle School winners out of more than 3700 entrants in the National STEM Video Game Challenge. His "Battle of the Bugs: Genes Rule!" game won in the category of Written Game Design Incorporating STEM Themes. Great job, Sam!! See more about the contest at the website: http://stemchallenge.org Summer reading lists are now posted on the SFS Middle School website under the Library section. Please note the required books for each grade level. The best thank you that a teacher can receive at the end of the year is a letter of thanks from students and parents. As you write these, I would love to place a copy in the teacher's file - send these to my attention in the office as well. I also welcome your reflections on your child's year and suggestions for ways that we can improve the Middle School experience.
