Tuesday - November 4, 2014 Principal's Letter NOTES FROM SALLY Announcements LS BOOKFAIR - THIS WEEKEND! NURTURING INNOVATION - MONDAY, NOV. 17 NOVEMBER 17 - EARLY RELEASE DAY AMBASSADOR EBRAHIM RASOOL - DECEMBER 2 ALYSON CAMBRIDGE '97 IN LA BOHÈME AT THE KENNEDY CENTER SAVE-THE-DATE: AUCTION BRAINSTORM PARTY 11/19 PARENTING TALKS OFFERED BY OTHER ORGANIZATIONS FINANCIAL AID FOR 2015-16 SCHOOL YEAR Other COMMUNITY SERVICE CORNER QUAKER QUOTE MS NEWSLETTER INFORMATION News Around the School MS NEWS LS NEWS Principal's Letter NOTES FROM SALLY This week’s query: Are we sure we are using our resources as efficiently as possible? Assembly: “Air: The Invisible Wonder” This week’s Northwest Current correspondent: Harold Fuson Tonight! Minimester trips information meeting for 7/8 parents at 7:30p in the Middle School Drama Studio. I apologize for the incorrect dates for some of the programs. The days of the week are correct in the original handout, and a corrected list of dates will be circulated tonight and via email tomorrow. Join us this Friday from 5:15-6pm as we gather in The Fox Den to celebrate the launch of our sustainable clothing line. This event will honor the hard work of current 7th grade students who were in the Clarkson homeroom in 6th grade. In May, students presented The Fox Den manager and the school administration with proposals to encourage Sidwell Friends to carry clothing that more closely reflects the school’s commitment to stewardship of the natural world. Light refreshments will be available, as well as items for purchase. Contact Kimberly Clarkson with questions. A gentle reminder – we are happy to deliver messages to students, but when they come in late in the day, it gets harder. Remember that 7/8 students go to PE at 2:00 Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday, and at 1:00 on Tuesday. This week seventeen members of our Middle School faculty are participating in a new professional development program. Taking advantage of the dynamic educators within our community, faculty are spending time in each other’s classrooms. These experiences are allowing observers to witness innovative teaching practices in action, as well as to learn more about areas of the school outside of their grade or subject area of focus. Keep an eye out for highlights which will be shared later in November. The Middle School Student Diversity Leadership Conference will be held this year on Monday, January 26th at Sandy Spring Friends School. Middle school students from all over the metro area will come together to talk about STEREOTYPING. How does stereotyping on a “micro” level (everyday interactions in the hallways, classrooms and lunchrooms) affect us? What role has stereotyping played in the life of Michael Brown and the countless West African victims of Ebola? We invite 6th, 7th and 8th graders to attend this half-day conference. Last year we had 36 students attend from Sidwell and this year should be very exciting, as some of our own students will be helping as facilitators and Tim Reagan’s Vertical Voices group will be performing! Interested in going? Please come and see Ms. Porter in the office or give your name to your advisor or homeroom teacher to pass along to Ms. Porter. You must register by this Friday, November 14th if you want to attend! Thank you so much to the Admissions Ambassadors and other students who got up early the day after Halloween to help with our Admissions Open House on Saturday! I still have a few dishes from the 8th grade Homecoming bake sale – let me know if you are missing something. It was great to see many of you at the presentation by Shankar Vedantam! Committees are considering additional work with his book, The Hidden Brain – stay tuned for more information. Announcements LS BOOKFAIR - THIS WEEKEND!
