Tuesday - September 27, 2011 From the School Query This week’s query: How can I include new friends without excluding old friends? Middle School queries for the week are written by the students in the 7th grade Quakerism and the Arts class. They are part of the daily bulletin and are read at Meeting for Worship each week. Student queries begin this week! Notes from Sally This week’s assembly: The Dialed Action Sports Team. Please note: This assembly will be held in the Wannan Gym (next to the playground) Parents are welcome to join us. A special note to parents of 5/6 students: please remember to send a snack each day with your child. With the early start to the day and lunch after PE they really need this snack at mid-morning! Back-to-School night is next Thursday, October 6th! We will begin in the Meeting Room at 6:00 with a short general meeting and then move to the Middle School; refreshments will be available in the lobby area. Please be sure that you know your son or daughter's homeroom teacher (5/6) or advisor (7/8) because you will move to that classroom after the general meeting. Many teachers use the time during the general meeting to get their classrooms ready; we ask that you not view that time -- or the evening in general -- as a time to drop in for private conversation about your son or daughter. Conference days are the fourth week in October. Child care is available for children of elementary and middle school age, but we MUST know how many students to expect so that we have enough staff to take care of them. We will also provide a pizza dinner for the students. The fee is $10 payable in cash that evening. Please call the Middle School office no later than next Tuesday, October 4, to sign up for child care. Students may be dropped off at the Wannan Gym, next to the Middle School playground. We regret that we can only provide child care to children of elementary and middle school age, and we encourage students to bring homework, reading materials, or activities to keep them occupied. The evening will end around 7:45 p.m. for 5th grade and around 8:45 p.m. for grades 6/7/8, and students may be picked up in the Dining Room. Call the Middle School office no later than next Tuesday, October 4, to reserve your space for child care. As you know, a program of Instrumental Music lessons began on campus this fall. There are still a few slots available; if you are interested, contact Upper School Instrumental Music teacher David Merlin-Jones (merlinjonesd@sidwell.edu) for more information. We just wanted to reiterate an announcement that we have been reinforcing with our students: if they are waiting in the garage for a ride after school and they need help, they should come to the Middle School for assistance. Back by popular demand – SFS calendars! They will be coming home with the youngest child in the family this week. Looking ahead – please mark your calendars for these upcoming CHI meetings: 6th grade October 17, 7th grade October 12, and 8th grade October 19. Instrumental Music Notes Instrumental Music Notes 5/6 Orchestra – Concert Band during Wednesday rehearsal period Rm 101 7/8 Orchestra – Concert Band during Wednesday rehearsal period Rm 101 All instrumentalists should drop off their instruments in Rm 101 when they arrive at school for rehearsals. Quaker Quotes: On Education "For many years Friends have been concerned about the problem of exclusivity in private schools especially those carrying the name of Friends. Those concerned with any Quaker-related school would agree that each institution has a continuing responsibility to discourage snobbishness and feelings of false superiority, to encourage economy and simplicity, and to cultivate a realization that with special opportunities go special obligations." (Excerpted from Advices, Friends Meeting of Washington, January 2011) "How is the Inward Teacher known? In joy and health, but also in loneliness and alienation; in the deepest encounters with other people and in dialogue with great ideas and works; in love but also in emptiness; in hunger but also in plenitude; in solitude but also in community. Wherever we are is the starting place for encountering the voice which can speak to our condition. We cannot compel the inner voice to speak, we can only try to practice openness and attention, and when we hear the voice we can only practice minding and answering." (Paul A. Lacey, Education and the Inward Teacher) “Quaker Quotes” is a weekly submission by Melissa Belman, Holly Moore and Cindy Terrell. We welcome ideas.
