By Lauren French (@laurennfrench or mailto:lfrench@politico.com lfrench@politico.com ) SCHUMER'S ELIZABETH WARREN PROBLEM. The great Manu Raju and John Bresnahan report, "New York Sen. Chuck Schumer has long been viewed as the heir apparent to Senate Democratic leader Harry Reid, with such strong support among moderates that a group of them privately urged him to mount a coup for party leader after the midterm election meltdown. Schumer didn't take on Reid - he's too loyal - but he is being forced to face a new power center inside the caucus, populists such as Sen. Elizabeth Warren. When Reid was in talks with Warren about a job in Senate leadership earlier this month, Schumer suggested tapping moderate Sen. Mark Warner, too, to balance out her progressive politics - or perhaps making her a "liaison to liberal groups," a narrower job than what Reid had proposed, according to sources familiar with the private talks. Warren, a Massachusetts Democrat, said no to both of Schumer's suggestions, later taking the job as a policy adviser to Schumer's messaging operation." http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=83e24b80482180b1ea61e2fd4bfb630ee8cf2d5a11cb2e9ab42d16fec0aa8d02 http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=83e24b80482180b1ea61e2fd4bfb630ee8cf2d5a11cb2e9ab42d16fec0aa8d02 DRIVING THE DAY: WHITE HOUSE SHIELDS 5 MILLION FROM DEPORTATION. POLITICO's triple threat, Carrie Budoff Brown, Seung Min Kim and Anna Palmer report, "The White House is in full-out sales pitch mode for President Barack Obama's announcement Thursday that he will shield about 5 million undocumented immigrants from deportation, circumventing Congress to provide the most sweeping changes to immigration policy in decades. Obama is meeting with key Democratic lawmakers. Aides are speaking with advocates and lining up surrogates who will help promote the plan. A Facebook video with the president released Wednesday afternoon drew more than 1 million viewers and was shared more than 23,000 times, reaching the feeds of more than 5.5 million people.... Senior administration officials began calling immigration reform proponents and lawmakers Wednesday to fill them in on plans for the rollout and the details of the proposal." http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=83e24b80482180b18587f0c25d0bf16ce902119117fc5f3d06dadfba54f6eb8f http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=83e24b80482180b18587f0c25d0bf16ce902119117fc5f3d06dadfba54f6eb8f THIS IS WHAT HAPPENS WHEN PAUL DOESN'T STAND. David Nather reports, "Rand Paul says he wants surveillance reform. Instead, he helped sink it. And now he's under fire from the civil liberties groups who have been his strongest allies in his war on the NSA's domestic spying program. If Paul really wanted to help the cause of reining in the NSA, critics say he could have broken with his party and voted to let the bill move ahead - a headline-grabbing moment that would make him stand out from the rest of the Republican presidential field... This type of criticism may become a recurring theme as Paul's presidential campaign blossoms - the purist libertarian beliefs that built the Paul brand are going to keep crashing into traditional Republican standards, especially on national security." http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=83e24b80482180b1313bc2b6a5e7c34e0bc19d1cfa770f486fd4a9ba079bc865 http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=83e24b80482180b1313bc2b6a5e7c34e0bc19d1cfa770f486fd4a9ba079bc865 HAPPY THURSDAY, November 20, 2014. GOLDMAN SACHS TAKES ITS TURN IN LEVIN'S CROSSHAIRS. The New York Times' Nathaniel Popper and Peter Eavis report, "A two-year Senate-led investigation is throwing back the curtain on the outsize and sometimes hidden sway that Wall Street banks have gained over the markets for essential commodities like oil, aluminum and coal. The Senate's Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations found that Goldman Sachs and JPMorgan Chase assumed a role of such significance in the commodities markets that it became possible for the banks to influence the prices that consumers pay while also securing inside information about the markets that could be used by their own traders.Bankers from both firms, along with other industry executives and regulators, will testify about the allegations at hearings on Thursday and Friday. The hearings will cover topics including conditions at a Goldman-owned coal mine in Colombia and the airline fuel arrangements that Morgan Stanley struck with United Airlines." http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=83e24b80482180b153af5612998c67a4bb662e5477cfe3340e3740ca15ea7510 http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=83e24b80482180b153af5612998c67a4bb662e5477cfe3340e3740ca15ea7510 IT'S BACK.... MJ Lee has the story. "'Audit the Fed' is here to stay. The movement to bring greater transparency to the Federal Reserve will be in full force in the new Congress, with Republican lawmakers in both the House and the Senate eager to reintroduce legislation in early 2015 requiring a full "audit" of the central bank. In the House, Rep. Thomas Massie (R-Ky.) is taking the torch from outgoing Rep. Paul Broun (R-Ga.), whose 'Audit the Fed' bill sailed through the House this year with bipartisan support. Across the Capitol, another Kentucky Republican - Sen. Rand Paul - is vowing to introduce the bill again, with renewed hope that the GOP takeover of the Senate will boost its chances of getting a floor vote in the next Congress." http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=83e24b80482180b1f770ebe5031fc0d93478124aac1e5fc1ebbab9131ad4ee0b http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=83e24b80482180b1f770ebe5031fc0d93478124aac1e5fc1ebbab9131ad4ee0b TRANSITIONS. POLITICO reports, "Freshman Rep. Ami Bera was declared the winner over former GOP Rep. Doug Ose in the hotly contested 7th District after his lead swelled to 1,432 votes on Wednesday. Both parties plowed millions of dollars into the Sacramento-area seat, in what appears to have been the nation's most expensive House race." http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=83e24b80482180b191b9e73fa6fdee342534649f1373cdea479868f58534ca3e http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=83e24b80482180b191b9e73fa6fdee342534649f1373cdea479868f58534ca3e DEMOCRATS ELECT CAUCUS LEADERS. Democrats have a new slate of leaders after a series of elections yesterday. Here's who you should know: Rep. G. K. Butterfield was elected as the 24th chair of the Congressional Black Caucus; Rep. Ron Kind was re-elected as the chair of the New Democrats; Rep. Corrine Brown won her race against Rep. Tim Walz to be the top Democrat on the Veterans Affairs Committee; Reps. Raul Grijalva and Keith Ellison were re-elected as co-chairs of the Progressive Caucus; Rep. Linda Sánchez was selected as the chair of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus. HIMES: DIDN'T GET DCCC BECAUSE OF WALL STREET. The Huffington Post's Samantha Lachman, "Rep. Jim Himes (D-Conn.) believes that House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) passed him over as the next head of House Democratic campaign efforts because of his ties to the financial services industry....Himes, a former Goldman Sachs banker whose district includes a high concentration of hedge fund and private equity executives, is one-third of what bank lobbyists refer to as the 'Three J's' of the House Financial Services Committee: Democrats who partner with Republicans to propose legislation that would de-regulate the industry." http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=83e24b80482180b1478777b51d20fc2a42e149312f5df90fbca4565c5e413342 http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=83e24b80482180b1478777b51d20fc2a42e149312f5df90fbca4565c5e413342 WAXMAN ALUMNI TO FETE CONGRESSMAN. California Democrat Henry Waxman will hold a reunion/farewell party this evening for his expansive network of former staffers and friends. A birdie tells Huddle that more than 300 people are expected to pay tribute to Waxman, who has been in Congress for 40 years. WEDNESDAY'S TRIVIA WINNER - John Ashbrook was the first to name New York as the state to produce the most vice presidents. TODAY'S TRIVIA - Thanksgiving is your Huddle author's favorite holiday. In honor of my bias, today's question will be Thanksgiving themed. With his 'Thanksgiving Proclamation,' Abraham Lincoln established the last Thursday of every month as the official celebration day. Who encourage him to make the holiday an official national event? It was pointed out to me that there have been two vice presidents who served in dual administrations. John C. Calhoun is the second VP to have done so, along with George Clinton. Apologies to Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell who was the first to name Calhoun. GET HUDDLE emailed to your Blackberry, iPhone or other mobile device each morning.
