Students began reviewing the progress they’ve made in the first quarter with their advisors this past week. Advisors are there to support students in a variety of ways: to serve as a general sounding board; strategize about time management; help with self-assessment on the student’s approach to school work; facilitate communication with the student’s teachers. Please know that your child’s advisors are an important resource for both your child and for you. If you have any questions about your child’s progress in school, please reach out to the advisor. On Monday, Upper School faculty will join colleagues from the other two divisions to hear the author of Creating Innovators, Tony Wagner, a nationally renowned educator and current Expert In Residence at Harvard University’s new Innovation Lab. His presentation promises to be stimulating and inspiring. Parents will have the opportunity to hear Tony speak on Monday evening from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. in the Robert L. Smith Meeting Room. At this annual event, 9th grade students and their families bake 150 to 200 pumpkin pies and apple pies that are delivered to local homeless shelters. We are asking 9th grade families to contribute some of the ingredients in advance: cans of unspiced pumpkin, cans of evaporated milk, and 5-pound bags of sugar. A few days before the pie bake, we are also asking for bags of apples. All donated ingredients should please be delivered to David Connell’s office (Upper School Community Service Office). In addition, we are also looking for volunteers to arrive at 10 a.m. on November 23 to help set up; volunteers to stay until 4:30 that day to help box the finished pies; and volunteers to deliver the pies to shelters on Monday. Here is the link to sign up: Genius: http://www.signupgenius.com/go/10c0a4ba5a922a20-freshman. This is always a terrific event, and we look forward to seeing everyone there! Smith Meeting Room. Child care will be provided. Other QUAKER QUOTES "God should be most where man is least: So, where is neither church nor priest, And never rag nor form of creed To clothe the nakedness of need,– Where farmer folk in silence meet,– I turn my bell-unsummoned feet; I lay the critic’s glass aside, I tread upon my lettered pride, And, lowest-seated, testify To the oneness of humanity; Confess the universal want, And share whatever Heaven may grant. He findeth not who seeks his own, The soul is lost that’s saved alone." ---Quaker poet John Greenleaf Whittier, 1807-1892 ?Quaker Quotes are intended to deepen the understanding of Quakerism in the Sidwell Friends School community.
