On Tuesday, voters in New Jersey entrusted me with the solemn responsibility of a six-year term to work for my state in the Senate -- thank you.

But the election isn't over.

There's one more important race that hasn't been decided: my Senate colleague, Mary Landrieu, is in a runoff election which will be decided one month from today, on December 6th.

My roots are in Louisiana: my grandfather was born there and I have precious memories of running around my great grandmother's home there. In the PBS special Finding Your Roots, my family's deep Louisiana history was explored and further discovered.(1)

I feel an urgency in making sure that Louisiana continues to be represented by a great Senator. Senator Mary Landrieu has impressed me as an incredible colleague who fights for issues of justice and economic progress. She has a tremendous ability to also work across the aisle and get things done for her state and our nation.

Right now she needs our help building the grassroots support necessary to make her case to Louisiana voters, and it's up to all of us to make sure she hits her 48-hour $100,000 grassroots goal.

Mary Landrieu is a fighter who has delivered for her constituents. That's why she has won every runoff election she's ever run: in 1987, 1996, and 2002 - I believe she WILL WIN AGAIN with our help.

In contrast, Mary's opponent Bill Cassidy voted to cut Pell Grants for students. He even voted against federal disaster relief for his own district after Hurricane Isaac. And Cassidy would be one more vote against qualified judges nominated by President Obama.

This fight is personal for me, and it should be personal for anyone who cares about leaders who prioritize results above partisan posturing. It's urgent that we support Mary now.
