FIGHT OVER PALESTINIAN STATE: The Deputy Speaker of the Israeli Knesset, Likud Member Danny Danon, will appear with Rick Perry at a New York press conference this morning ahead of President Obama's visit to the United Nations amidst the ongoing scramble to block Palestine's bid for United Nations recognition. POPPING OVERNIGHT - DCCC OUTRAISES NRCC AGAIN: The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee raised $3.56 million in August, beating its Republican counterpart by about a half a million dollars despite being in the minority. Remarkably the DCCC has taken in more money year-to-date - $41.26 million - than the National Republican Congressional Committee - $40.38 million.

EXCLUSIVE - DSCC LAUNCHES CAMPAIGN TO LINK REPUBLICAN SENATE CANDIDATES TO PERRY: The Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee will use targeted online ads (Google) and social media (Facebook) to tie Republican Senate candidates around the country to Rick Perry's controversial rhetoric on Social Security, a sign of how potentially damaging Democrats think Perry could be to Republicans down ticket if he wins the nomination. The ads are partly meant to rally the base and raise grassroots money for the DSCC. The Democrats are also hitting Republican candidates for backing the Cut, Cap and Balance pledge - which they say would more indirectly leads to entitlement cuts. One reads: "Tell Perry
Social Security Is Not a Ponzi scheme. Stand With the DSCC!" The committee is not revealing the size of the buy, although it is probably small and the cost will ultimately be determined by clicks.

BACHMANN FADES - NATIONAL SUPPORT DROPS TO 5%: In the new USA Today/Gallup poll, Michele Bachmann is in a three-way tie for fourth place with Newt Gingrich and Herman Cain - all at five percent. Weakness in national polls doesn't mean she can't still win Iowa, where she's essentially investing all her resources. Perry leads Mitt Romney 31-24 in the survey. "Perry is stronger among Republicans and independents who lean Republican, the voters who settle nominations. In a head-to-head race, 49% say they would vote for Perry, 39% for Romney," Susan Page writes in today's USA Today. "Romney does better among the swing voters who hold the key to most general elections. Among all registered
voters, Romney slightly bests President Obama 49%-47%, while Perry lags behind the president, 45% to 50%."

THE SPIN CYCLE CHURNS-ROLLINS HURTS BACHMANN AGAIN: Former campaign manager Ed Rollins said Bachmann doesn't have the resources to go past the first caucuses, a devastating indictment from someone who would be in a position to know. 'I think Michele, which always was the game plan, if she somehow for some reason could win Iowa, then she could get another look. Right now, she's competing hard in Iowa,' he said on MSNBC's Andrea Mitchell Reports. "She doesn't have the ability or the resources to go beyond that, Iowa, at this point and time, where Perry and Romney, with lots of money can go into South Carolina, Arizona, Florida and other places.' -RALPH NADER WANTS A PRIMARY CHALLENGE AGAINST OBAMA: Ralph Nader and Cornel West circulated a letter to more than 150 liberals yesterday pitching a primary challenge against the president, outlining the progressive critique of the president's failures in the last two years. It was not a response to the morning speech, but pent up frustration. Still, more than 45 liberals - folks like Gore Vidal - signed on. Nader insisted in a phone interview with The Los Angeles Times' Mark Barabak that the goal of the effort is to galvanize the base by forcing the president to defend his performance, not to deny him the nomination or cost him the general election. But he would not rule out running as a
third-party candidate again next year, describing it only as "very unlikely." The press release:

After his 10 a.m. press conference at the W Hotel on Park Avenue, he'll host a noon lunch fundraiser at the Harvard Club and a 5:30 p.m. reception at the Lotos Club. Bachmann continues her Iowa swing, with a 9 a.m. tour of a packing company in Des Moines. Ron Paul hosts a town hall in Council Bluffs at noon, another in Sioux City at 2 p.m. and a third in Spencer at 4 p.m. Newt Gingrich has a 2 p.m. town hall in Sioux City. MICHIGAN SENATE - HOEKSTRA STRATEGY MEMO: A two-page strategy memo (written for public consumption and shared with Score) presents a rosy picture for Pete Hoekstra as he ratchets up his campaign to win the Republican nomination for Senate in Michigan. Highlights from the note (written by John Yob, Fred Davis and Ed Goeas): "Fundraising is going well, and we are cautiously optimistic that we can reach a gross receipt number in the range of $400,000 to $500,000 in this first quarter of fundraising...At Pete's direction, we haven't hired any campaign staff yet, outside of our fundraising team...Tracking numbers that we have seen have the race with Pete around 50% and the rest of the candidates
in single digits."

TEXAS REDISTRICTING - FEDS SAY MAPS DON'T COMPLY WITH VOTING RIGHTS ACT: "Lawyers for the U.S. Justice Department said two of Texas' controversial redistricting maps didn't comply with the Voting Rights Act's minimum standards, finding that the proposed changes to state House and congressional districts failed to maintain or increase the ability of minorities to elect their candidates of choice," per the San Antonio Express-News. "While the department's filing in federal court in Washington, D.C., on Monday isn't binding, it virtually assures that Attorney General Greg Abbott's lawsuit will head to trial. In the past, it has usually fallen to the department to certify that Texas'
redistricting plans don't violate civil rights protections. Abbott bypassed that process by taking redistricting to the court."

CONNECTICUTSENATE - DSCC READY TO ATTACK WHEN MCMAHON ANNOUNCES: The Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee will send this press release out later from spokesman Matt Canter: "Linda McMahon tried to buy the election last year with more than $50 million dollars of attacks and negative campaigning. ARIZONA SENATE - DEMS ATTACK FLAKE FOR ENDORSING ROMNEY: The state Democratic Party is seizing on the Senate candidate's endorsement of the former Massachusetts governor to paint him as a flip-flopper. "The only thing Jeff Flake and Mitt Romney both firmly believe in is saying anything to get elected," Arizona Democratic Party executive director Luis Heredia says in a statement. "That's why today's news that one flip-flopper has endorsed another infamous flip-flopper comes as no surprise to anyone who remembers Flake's transparently political move to drop his support for comprehensive immigration reform in favor of the Russell Pearce agenda."

THE ANN RICHARDS EFFECT - PRE-ELECTION POLLS UNDERESTIMATE THE SUCCESS OF WOMEN CANDIDATES: Two political scientists analyzed pre-election polls in 200 Senate and gubernatorial races from 1989 to 2008 where female candidates faced off against white males. They found that polls underestimate women's strength by about two points on average, which is statistically significant. Chris Stout and Reuben Kline call this phenomenon the Richards Effect for Ann Richards of Texas, and they discover that it is "more common in states which exhibit traits associated with culturally conservative views of gender issues."
