Wednesday - September 28, 2011 From the School Message from Lee Last week’s Back to School Night was a wonderful event and it was great to have a chance to speak with so many of you. I look forward to meeting with 10th Grade Parents on Thursday, 10/6 at 7:30am in the Dining Room to have an informal conversation about issues relating to that grade. Several parents expressed interest in discussing community service, so David Connell, Upper School Director of Community Service, will join us. On Thursday, October 13 at 7:30am in the Dining Room, there will be an 11th Grade Parent Conversation with me. For both meetings, please let your grade representatives or me know if there are specific questions and/or issues that you would like addressed. Peace, Lee School Year Abroad Please join us for a School Year Abroad (SYA) informational meeting on Wednesday evening, October 5 at 6:00 in the Zartman House Drawing room. All interested students and parents are invited. Erika Berry, SYA coordinator Next to New Sale Donate: Only 6 days left to donate your items to the Next to New Sale. Sidwell’s hugely popular sale of quality used items is quickly approaching and we need your DONATIONS. We are low on donations and need your support. Our biggest needs include: bikes, clothing (including boutique items, bags, wallets, jewelry, shoes), toys, housewares, furniture, rugs, lamps, sporting equipment, baby equipment including strollers and other gear, and infant/toddler clothing, and children’s books (we are not accepting books for adults). All donations are tax deductible. Upper school drop-off times are Mondays and Wednesdays from 8-10 and Saturdays from 9-11. The final day for donations is October 10th! Drive through the parking garage, start to exit towards the tennis courts on your right. Drive over tennis courts and down the hill. Next to New collection center is at the bottom of the hill to your right. Lower School drop-off dates are Wednesday, September 28 and October 5 from 8:00-8:45 a.m. From the Admissions Office The deadline for current parents to submit Part 1, the Application Form, for a child for the 2012-13 academic year is October 1, 2011. All supplementary material to complete the application is due by January 15, 2012. Please call the Admissions Office at 202-537-8111 if you have any questions. Auction 2012 This year it will be held on campus on Saturday, April 21. The co-chairs of the auction are Meg Hauge, Shallah Jewel, Stacey Lubar and Sarah Meyers. Volunteers Needed: Please join us for our first auction kick-off meeting on Tuesday, October 4 at 9:00 a.m. in the Zartman Drawing Room. There are jobs for everyone including soliciting donations, set-up, recruiting parents to attend the event, writing descriptions for the catalog, and so much more. Email the Events for Student Scholarships office if you plan to attend the meeting. PA Announcements SFS Family Service Project Saturday, October 15, 9 am - 1:30 pm Sidwell Friends School students and families are invited to a morning of planting garlic and harvesting crops at Clagett Farm, in Upper Marlboro, a non-profit working farm that is part of the Chesapeake Bay Foundation. Clagett Farm raises a wide variety of produce and strives to provide its food to people of all income levels through its Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) program, and through a joint effort with the Capital Area Food Bank almost half of its produce is distributed free or at reduced prices to underserved communities in Washington, D.C. This project is suitable for all ages. If there is sufficient interest, we will arrange to meet at school and travel to the farm by a SFS bus (max. 16 passengers). For more information and to volunteer, please contact June Das Gupta by Friday, October 7th. Please indicate whether you would like to use the bus. We will be able to accommodate 25 volunteers. Faculty and Staff Appreciation Breakfast The US Parents Association is sponsoring an Appreciation Breakfast for our wonderful teachers and staff on Friday, Oct 7th. We need volunteers to bring baked goods, fresh fruit, ground coffees, teas, juices and other breakfast goodies. Contributions should be dropped off at the Upper School Faculty Lounge no later than 7:45 am on the morning of the breakfast. Please be sure to place your name on all your non-disposable dishes and have your student pick them up by the end of the day in the Faculty Lounge. We are using the Signup Genius website to manage food and drink contributions. Please follow this link to sign up today. On Friday, Oct 7th, we also need 3 volunteers to help set up at 7:45 am, and 3 volunteers to help clean up at 1:30 in the afternoon. Please email Alison Ling if you can help or if you have any questions. Faculty and staff welcome these special breakfast treats. Your US PA thanks you for your help in showing our appreciation to the incredibly dedicated Sidwell Friends faculty, coaching, administrative and maintenance staff. Meg Geschwind and Alison Ling US PA At-Large Representatives Other News Car Wash Support the Crew Team and get your ride clean! The Fall Car Wash is the team's major fundraiser and a great way to wash off that late summer pollen. This Sunday, Oct. 2 from 11am-2pm in the garage. Quaker Quotes “For many years Friends have been concerned about the problem of exclusivity in private schools especially those carrying the name of Friends. Those concerned with any Quaker-related school would agree that each institution has a continuing responsibility to discourage snobbishness and feelings of false superiority, to encourage economy and simplicity, and to cultivate a realization that with special opportunities go special obligations.” (Excerpted from Advices, Friends Meeting of Washington, January 2011) “How is the Inward Teacher known? In joy and health, but also in loneliness and alienation; in the deepest encounters with other people and in dialogue with great ideas and works; in love but also in emptiness; in hunger but also in plenitude; in solitude but also in community. Wherever we are is the starting place for encountering the voice which can speak to our condition. We cannot compel the inner voice to speak, we can only try to practice openness and attention, and when we hear the voice we can only practice minding and answering.” (Paul A. Lacey, Education and the Inward Teacher) “Quaker Quotes” is a weekly submission by Melissa Belman, Holly Moore and Cindy Terrell. We welcome ideas.
