Wednesday - September 14, 2011 From the School Message from Lee Back-to-School Night, Thursday, September 22 We are looking forward to welcoming you to Upper School Back-to-School Night on Thursday, September 22. The program will begin promptly at 6:45 p.m. in the Athletic Center. Programs and name tags will be available there until 6:45 p.m. Please make every effort to be in place by 6:45 p.m. for the beginning of the program. Advisors will distribute student schedules from 7:15 – 7:25 p.m. To enable the evening to run smoothly, please know the name of your child’s advisor so you can move from the Athletic Center to advisory in a timely fashion. However, the names of advisors will be posted in the hallways as well. This is a wonderful opportunity to meet your child’s teachers and to learn more about the classroom experience this year. I will also be available in the Library throughout the evening if you would like to stop by and chat. See you on September 22! Peace, Lee Class of 2012 Parents: Reminders from College Counseling Thursday, September 15 at 7:00 pm in the Smith Meeting Room. Please join the College Counselors for a look at the fall term for seniors and a discussion of the college application process. Monday, September 26 at 7:30 am in the Dining Room. Please join Eric Monheim, Director of College Counseling, for an informal conversation and Q & A session. Also, for those parents who have not yet turned in their “Parent Questionnaire,” please do so as soon as possible. The questionnaire can be found in the “Downloadable Forms” section of the College Counseling Website. Community Service Newsletter now available The September edition of the Upper School Community Service Newsletter is now available on the SFS website. Use this link to access the Community service webpage. You will find the newsletter halfway down in the middle of the page. This newsletter highlights upcoming and recent community service events taking place at the Upper School. Please read this month’s publication if you would like to learn more, and/or get involved in the community service program at the Upper School. Events for Student Scholarships NEXT-TO-NEW SALE: Our hugely popular sale of quality used items is back and we need your help to make this event more successful than ever! The Next-to-New Sale will be held October 20-22 and is part of the Sidwell Friends School Events for Student Scholarships program that raises money for financial aid. All proceeds directly benefit student financial aid. We need your donations! Collection times at the Wisconsin Avenue campus will run September 7 to October 10 on Mondays and Wednesdays from 8:00 – 10:00 am and Saturdays from 9:00 – 11:00 am. We will also have a limited number of collection days at the lower school -- look for updates in future newsletters. Please click here for a list of items we accept and do not accept and directions for where and how to drop off your donations. We need volunteers! There are volunteer jobs for everyone at this event! Both men and women are needed for weekday and weekend shifts. You can spend as much time helping as you would like -- even a few hours is a huge help! We are looking for volunteers to assist with collecting, sorting and pricing donations, setting-up for the sale, cashiering, and cleaning-up. We are also looking for “Section Heads” for men’s clothing, textiles, shoes, and food for the volunteers. As a section head we ask that you take responsibility for a particular category of donations and oversee its organization. If you are interested in learning more about these positions, please contact Lauren Mulcahy, Director of Special Events at mulcahyL@sidwell.edu or at 202-537-8110. The Next-to-New Sale is a great way to meet members of the SFS community! Friends and extended family are also welcome to get involved. Frustrated by the Garage Drop-off Line? Feel free to use the Zartman drive loop for drop-off and pick-up. When exiting, please turn right only. When dropping off in the garage, please observe these rules: Pull far forward to allow cars behind you to drop off students, and direct students to exit cars on the curb side only. Feel free to drop students in the parking area, but make sure to pull far to the right so that other cars can pass on the left. When driving on campus, please use extreme care, do not idle motors while waiting, and never speak on a cell phone (hands-free or not) while driving. Admissions Office Announcement In an effort to work more closely with current families who are applying a child for the 2012-13 academic year, the deadline to submit Part I, the Application Form, is October 1, 2011. All supplementary material to complete the application is due by January 15, 2012. The online application is available at www.sidwell.edu/admissions/application-materials. Please call the Admissions Office at 202-537-8111 if you have any questions.
