I am writing today to invite you to a great event supporting kids who have lost a parent at an early age. Together with Fred Humphries at Microsoft, I have the great honor and pleasure of hosting the kick-off event for the Sydney and Nolan Smith Foundation, www.sydneyandnolan.org<https://mail.maroonpr.com/owa/redir.aspx?C=26c9da5fd782497d8ad5d4dd9848a4c1&URL=http%3a%2f%2fwww.sydneyandnolan.org>. In 2011, Duke University basketball star and first round NBA pick Nolan Smith and his sister Sydney founded the Sydney and Nolan Smith Foundation in honor of their father, Derek Smith. He was an All-American at Louisville, NBA star, and coach of the Washington Bullets who suddenly died from a heart attack at age 34. The Sydney and Nolan Smith Foundation was created because they wanted to take something that forever changed their lives and turn that experience into a positive by sharing with other children who have suffered similar losses. As many of you know, Duke basketball is a real passion of mine. During the past couple years, I have had the great fortune of getting to know Sydney and Nolan's mom, Monica Malone, as well as Sydney and Nolan. They are terrific people, committed to helping kids who have had experiences similar to theirs. I have tremendous respect and affection for each of them As noted in the attached invitation, our kickoff event will be held on Thursday, October 13, 2011, from 6-8:30 pm, at Microsoft's beautiful new offices on K Street and include a cocktail reception and a silent auction with some terrific Duke basketball and other sports memorabilia. It will also feature a brief program during which both Sydney and Nolan will speak to those in attendance about their initiatives. The Foundation is personally important to me and I'd love for you to join this kickoff celebration to learn about Sydney and Nolan's plans for the Foundation. Our Washington event is the first of several that are planned around the country, and our hope is to build recognition and awareness for the Foundation in the District and surrounding areas. After learning about the Foundation and hearing from Sydney and Nolan, should you wish to make a donation to the Foundation's mission, we'd be tremendously grateful. Most importantly, we really would like to "get the word out" about the Foundation, and your participation in this exciting kickoff event would help make this a reality. Please RSVP to Caitlyn Gart (cgart@pmj-dc.com<https://mail.maroonpr.com/owa/redir.aspx?C=26c9da5fd782497d8ad5d4dd9848a4c1&URL=mailto%3acgart%40pmj-dc.com>, 202-775-8116) or myself if you are able to attend. Thanks in advance for considering this. I hope to see you on the 13th. Warm regards, Jeff Jeffrey J.
