Thanks for the update on the Awards Ceremony - - this will be an outstanding event for the WFP/USA.
We have two wonderful award recipients that we are honoring, have a top notch panel set up beforehand and a terrific venue on the 7th floor of the State Department. Given this, we have a real opportunity to raise significant funds from this event, all of which go directly to support our bottom line. We netted a little less than $300,000 on the Awards Ceremony in 2010 and there is no reason why we can’t set a goal of netting at least $500,000 from this year’s event.
However, given that we have raised $270,000 to date, it is going to require each of us on the Board to raise $20,000 between now and the event on October 24th. I would sincerely appreciate it if everyone on the Board could make a concerted effort the next few weeks to reach out to your contacts in the corporate community in an effort to help reach our goal of netting at least $500,000 from this year’s event. Thanks for all your continued support of the WFP/USA and our mission of ending global hunger.

As you know, we are honoring Bill Gates and Howard Buffett for their leadership in establishing the Purchase for Progress program. Immediately prior to the award ceremony, we are convening a conference on global hunger. The conference and award ceremony will be held at the US Department of State on October 24th.

The award ceremony will consist of a dialogue among Bill Gates, Howard Buffett, Josette Sheeran and Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton. All of the participants are excited about the format. It will run from approximately 6-7:15pm.

The conference will consist of a panel discussion and keynote address. The panel discussion will focus on private sector efforts to address global hunger and will explore the incentives, disincentives and models for private sector engagement. Greg Page, CEO of Cargill, and Howard Buffett are confirmed participants. The keynote address will focus on the link between hunger, global stability and U.S. national security. We have invited General Petraeus to deliver this address.

We set a goal of raising $500,000 in sponsorships for the event. Thus far, we have raised $271,000 – as set forth in the chart below. We sincerely appreciate the efforts of Randy Russell and Bonnie Raquet in helping secure these funds. As you know, all of the funds raised are “unrestricted” and can be used to cover WFPUSA’s operational costs. The Board’s assistance in helping reach the goal is greatly appreciated.
