It would be incorrect to write
"Maisy loves lots of sports such as: soccer, Lax, basketball, etc." because
"Maisy loves lots of sports such as" is not a complete sentence.
Commas:
1. To separate items in a list.
Mike ate two hot dogs, three hamburgers, and a fistful of antacids.
2. To isolate parenthetical expressions.
Sophia, who just LOVES the ACT, is working hard to go to Emory.
3. To join two COMPLETE sentences with one of the FANBOYS (for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so). So, for example, “Ned likes vanilla, but he is not a fan of pistachio.” That needs a comma, but this one doesn’t: “Ned likes vanilla but not pistachio.” Cool?
