Dear FIT,

It's been a whirlwind 2017-2018 disaster season from hurricanes in United States, wildfires in Spain, flooding in Canada and earthquakes in Mexico. We've also seen lava flows in Hawaii to volcanic eruptions in Guatemala. The World Economic Forum has announced "Extreme Weather Events" and "Natural Disasters" as two of the top three risks for "likelihood" and "impact" for our global future. As the frequency and intensity of disasters increase, we are continuing to find solutions that "FIT" by innovating with communities across the globe.

** Cascadia Solutions with City of Redmond
Do Tank

Redmond's Emergency Manager Dr. Pattijean Hooper and Chief Wrangler Desi convened Emergency Manager and Innovators from 7 countries, 12 Emergency Management offices, innovators from local start-up technology companies to Amazon's Drone team to brainstorm the future of communications and transportation in the wake of an earthquake in the Pacific Northwest. Solutions generated from the brainstorm will be deployed in the future Cascadia Rising full-scale exercise in 2019. Check out the amazing illustration from artist / FIT Member Lizz. The theme: Flintstones/Jetsons to support low and high tech solutions in disaster response.

What is ShelterSmart?

ShelterSmart is a design innovation project that provides community organizations with simple tools to create pop-up shelters for future disasters.

** The project came into being during a discussion between Mary W, Head of Design Transformation at BBVA, Christoph M, a doctoral student at the Rutgers University School of Communication and Information and FIT's Desi. They were brainstorming about how to provide communities with cutting-edge solutions in the wake of disasters such as Hurricane Harvey and the Mexico City earthquake.

** After deploying into disasters, listening to communities and reviewing the data, the team concluded that sheltering was the area where they could have the greatest impact. They began analyzing the specific needs of communities during disaster situations with the intent of holding a workshop in which participants would use design thinking methodologies to co-create a sheltering solution with responders and survivors.

Innovation & Leadership

Calgary, Alberta

Emergency Managers from across Canada (and around the globe) convened on the 54th floor of the Bow Tower overlooking the rolling foothills and Canadian Rockies. IAEM Canada's President Greg S. convened experts to discuss innovation and leadership in crisis. Amongst the highlights were Harvard's Eric M., Conference Board of Canada's Kabi S. & Australia's David P. Wrangler Desi was humbled to join the team and be a part of the White Hat Ceremony to become a honorary Calgarian. Greg, Paula, Carlee, Ryna & the rest of the IAEM Canada Team surprised the Wrangler so much that she wore her white hat backwards. Canadians continue to take emergency management by storm.

During our crisis reduction and relief events, FIT offers new skills through our 3 step design process (3 Step Prep), a proven method used to solve challenges in emergencies. The 3 Step Prep is also used in our workshops, called “Do Tanks”.

Ontario Emergency Managers - Private Sector Engagement

From ice storms, windstorms & flooding Ontario Emergency Managers joined for a storytelling series followed by a negotiation to build resilience in the province. DRIE SWO's President/Canada Tire Tom S. shared his vision for a proactive approach to climate change inviting FIT's Desi and Donna D. to support the facilitation alongside Canada Public Safety's Matt G. Wrangler suggests we keep an eye on what Tom is up to...his vision, drive and strong ties to private sector will create a tri-fecta for mitigating before the next storm. Way to go team!

Setting the Tone for Emergency Management

We sat down to a bbq with IAEM Region 4 - discussions with Miami Beach Emergency Management's (EM) Shari L. had us learning about creative private/public partnerships solutions, Santa Rosa's EM's Daniel H. kept us engaged discussing his highly active COAD (Communities & Organizations Active in Disaster), and Tampa's EM's Chauncia W. led the charge as Region 4's President. All while Saluda County EM's Josh M. worked diligently behind the scenes on IT to put on a great event. Emergency managers discussed a host of regional disasters that occur in Tennessee, Florida, Alabama, Georgia, Kentucky, Mississippi, & North and South Carolinas. ...these Emergency Manager are setting the tone with integrating innovation into their summer exercises and future storms.

Tri-Cities Medical Response System spans Hastings, Grand Island, Kearney and the surrounding Nebraska communities and consists of public health, hospitals, emergency management and city government. The TRIMRS Do Tank led by Emergency Manager Dustin H. led participants through solving for flooding in south central Nebraska. Participants utilized the design-thinking process called the 3 Step Prep which included collaborating with the agricultural industry to support evacuation, response efforts and damage assessment.

Washington, D.C. with US Chamber of Commerce
New Jersey's Innovation Technology Institute's Denise S. delivered a presentation on FIT's work with drones in disasters alongside UPS and LockheedMartin to a full auditorium. Nese is a physicist, technologist and innovator who led the way in flying drones with our United Nation and Red Cross partners in Cape May, New Jersey in 2016. Cowlitz Emergency Manager Lorraine C. discussed the innovation in the Pacific Northwest and her work on preparedness campaigns while also learning from Australian and New Zealand Emergency Managers at the Emergency Media and Public Affairs (EMPA) Conference. FIT and EMPA are preparedness partners, we appreciate EMPA's progressive approach to disasters.
