Capitol Shooting US Capitol Hill police shot a male suspect this afternoon after he attempted to take a gun through metal detectors at the Capitol Visitor Center entrance. A female civilian bystander sustained minor injuries from shrapnel, and the gunman was taken to a nearby hospital. CNN reports [ http://www.cnn.com/2016/03/28/politics/u-s-capitol-and-white-house-on-lockdown/index.html ] that police say the incident was the “act of a single person who has frequented the Capitol grounds.” The Washington Post has additional coverage [ https://www.washingtonpost.com/local/public-safety/gunshots-reported-at-us-capitol-complex/2016/03/28/f1b961ba-f515-11e5-8b23-538270a1ca31_story.html ] . Misidentified The death toll from last week’s terrorist attacks in Brussels rose early today when Belgian officials said that four people injured had died in hospitals. Belgian authorities also announced Monday that they had charged three men who were detained following Sunday’s raids with participating in the activities of a terrorist group. It was not clear if the three were connected to last Tuesday’s attacks. And, as the New York Times reports [ http://www.nytimes.com/2016/03/29/world/europe/brussels-attacks.html?_r=0 ] , Brussels police released a suspect they now acknowledge they had misidentified. Dive Deeper: CSIS’s Anthony Cordesman released a graphic survey [ http://csis.org/publication/key-trends-metrics-terrorism ] late last week of reporting from different officials, media, and research centers on the recent trends in terrorism and key related factors. [ http://csis.org/publication/key-trends-metrics-terrorism ] Lahore Easter Bombing Pakistan suffered one of its deadliest terrorist attacks since an Islamist insurgency began in 2007 on Sunday when the Pakistani Taliban targeted Christians celebrating Easter. An amusement park bombing in Lahore killed at least 72 people including 17 children and left the nation reeling, as the Wall Street Journal reports [ http://www.wsj.com/articles/lahore-park-bombing-leaves-pakistan-reeling-1459185570 ] . I Like It Like That Eye-catching things in CSIS's orbit Bloomberg has a new video series that premiered last week called “Hello World [ http://www.bloomberg.com/features/2016-hello-world ] .” The business channel bills the series as a “journey that stretches across the globe to find the inventors, scientists and technologists shaping our future.” Like it. Smiles This morning I went to a Soul Cycle session, where all the cool kids (including 60-something year old kids) go to experience state of the art indoor stationary biking. It’s great exercise, and great fun too. The sonic barrage of high volume, high intensity music keeps everyone smiling even through the most physically challenging moments the class has to offer. The instructors, in my case this morning, Sunny, make up the musical play lists. I always learn something new from their musical choices. Today, Sunny devised a playlist she called Adele v. Sia. Everyone knows who Adele is. She is the biggest pop star on the planet. But I had, and still have no idea who Sia is except that she is a really big deal, like American Idol big deal. Both artists are super successful because they have great pop hooks that get embedded in listener’s ears. Their hooks got me to thinking about some of my favorite all-time hooks. The kind that stand the test of time. I don’t know if Adele or Sia’s hooks will last. But I can tell you that surely the hooks created by Chrissie Hynde and her band The Pretenders are for all time. Hynde, now 64 (in this video a mere 57), defines the essence of rock and roll for many. I’m one of those people. “Middle of the Road [ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-CYsOGTA0eo ] ” is an all-time hook and always a smile.
