Global markets convulsed on the news, the starkest sign yet that the threat of a trade war—once dismissed by many investors as unlikely—is rising again, as the Wall Street Journal reports (https://www.wsj.com/articles/markets-begin-to-take-threat-of-trade-war-seriously-1529411543?mod=hp_lead_pos1&utm_source=CSIS+All&utm_campaign=e06c2bff7a-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2018_06_19_08_38&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_f326fc46b6-e06c2bff7a-145367789) . Dive Deeper: Read the new CSIS commentary from William Reinsch, “Beginning of a Tectonic Shift on Trade? (https://www.csis.org/analysis/beginning-tectonic-shift-trade?utm_source=CSIS+All&utm_campaign=e06c2bff7a-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2018_06_19_08_38&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_f326fc46b6-e06c2bff7a-145367789) ” And, by Andrea Durkin for Trade Vistas, a joint initiative of the Hinrich Foundation and CSIS: “The Sobering Reality of a Tariff War (https://csis.us11.list-manage.com/track/click?u=833ec271d60c6750d9c3baaac&id=ded7d56d85&e=3574887df7&utm_source=CSIS+All&utm_campaign=e06c2bff7a-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2018_06_19_08_38&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_f326fc46b6-e06c2bff7a-145367789) ” ** Withdraw from UN Human Rights Council ------------------------------------------------------------ The Trump administration withdrew from the United Nations Human Rights Council on Tuesday in protest of what it perceives as an entrenched bias against Israel and a willingness to allow notorious human rights abusers as members, as the Washington Post reports (https://www.washingtonpost.com/world/national-security/us-expected-to-back-away-from-un-human-rights-council/2018/06/19/a49c2d0c-733c-11e8-b4b7-308400242c2e_story.html?utm_term=.ed7758b0ea0b&utm_source=CSIS+All&utm_campaign=e06c2bff7a-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2018_06_19_08_38&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_f326fc46b6-e06c2bff7a-145367789) . Robert King, former special envoy for North Korea human rights issues, and Joseph Kim, a young man who defected from North Korea in 2006. ** Kim Jong-un Returns to China ------------------------------------------------------------ North Korea’s leader, Kim Jong-un, arrived in Beijing on Tuesday amid the escalating trade conflict between China and the United States, one that gives him an opening to play the powers against each other as Washington presses him to dismantle his nuclear arsenal, as the New York Times reports (https://www.nytimes.com/2018/06/18/world/asia/kim-jong-un-china-north-korea.html?rref=collection%2Fsectioncollection%2Fworld&utm_source=CSIS+All&utm_campaign=e06c2bff7a-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2018_06_19_08_38&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_f326fc46b6-e06c2bff7a-145367789) . The surprise trip, just a week after his landmark summit meeting in Singapore with President Trump, is the North Korean leader’s third visit to China since March. ** Immigration Firestorm ------------------------------------------------------------ Mexico’s government issued a strong rebuke Tuesday to U.S. immigration policies that it said violate the human rights of children by separating them from their undocumented migrant parents, as the Wall Street Journal reports (https://www.wsj.com/articles/mexico-rebukes-u-s-over-policy-removing-immigrant-children-from-parents-1529432369?utm_source=CSIS+All&utm_campaign=e06c2bff7a-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2018_06_19_08_38&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_f326fc46b6-e06c2bff7a-145367789) . As Politico reports (https://www.politico.com/story/2018/06/19/trump-capitol-hill-visit-immigration-653545?utm_source=CSIS+All&utm_campaign=e06c2bff7a-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2018_06_19_08_38&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_f326fc46b6-e06c2bff7a-145367789) , President Trump heads to Capitol Hill Tuesday evening to rally House Republicans behind an immigration bill. ** Your Questions ------------------------------------------------------------ Do you have any questions about trade and how a changing U.S. trade policy may affect your life? If you do, please email me your question(s) to aschwartz@csis.org (mailto:aschwartz@csis.org?subject=Your%20Questions) . We’ll publish some of the best questions and get our experts to answer them on an upcoming CSIS podcast. ** Enroll for Fall ------------------------------------------------------------ Now enrolling for the Fall, CSIS & Syracuse University's Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs offer a new Executive Master's in International Relations. I do too. The Hold Steady are known as a fantastic, energetic live band. But a few months ago, their brilliant lead singer Craig Finn divulged on the Recode Media podcast hosted by Peter Kafka that they only perform live on weekends these days and at select venues. Finn explained that their audience had grown up, were now home with young children, and couldn’t make it out to shows on a Wednesday night. That’s true audience awareness. I haven’t been out to see a live show during the week in years. I can barely gin up the energy to go to a reception after work--in case you didn’t know, receptions are part of the fabric of inside the beltway life. Speaking of life inside the beltway, I was at lunch today and as I was leaving Bono walked in. That was cool. Anyway, when The Hold Steady does perform live, it’s well worth going to see, as you can see here (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lm1n7yNPIIU&utm_source=CSIS+All&utm_campaign=e06c2bff7a-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2018_06_19_08_38&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_f326fc46b6-e06c2bff7a-145367789) . (And don’t miss the second of the two songs “The Swish,” contained in this clip).
