President Donald Trump said he accepted the resignation of EPA chief Scott Pruitt following months of an unceasing cascade of scandals involving his travels, secrecy, spending and habit of seeking favors from industry lobbyists.

In a tweet, Trump said Pruitt "has done an outstanding job," and he named Pruitt's deputy, Andrew Wheeler, as acting administrator.

The resignation of Pruitt, once regarded as one of the most effective Cabinet members in advancing Trump's policies, came after months of damaging revelations about his practices, including a $50-a-night Capitol Hill room rental from the wife of a lobbyist with business before EPA, Pruitt's use of EPA resources to seek employment for his wife and his record spending on personal security.
