Amy Gutmann was honored with the Eugene M. Lang Lifetime Achievement Award at the “Spirit of the Dream” Gala in New York. As Penn’s president, Gutmann, herself a first-generation college graduate, has helped fulfill that dream for many others. Penn is the largest university in the country to provide grant-based financial aid, and, since Gutmann initiated the program in ‘08, the University has awarded nearly $1.5 billion in grants to students. Since 2004, the number of Penn students who are first-gen has gone from one in 20 to one in seven. Harlan Stone, an Engineering overseer and Penn alum, introduced her at the event.

When Meghan Ramos was 8, one of her family’s friends and her family’s golden retriever had lymphoma. This eventually led her to the School of Veterinary Medicine, and now the new D.V.M. is continuing her research at the Working Dog Center. “I wanted a way to help people and help animals, and veterinary medicine fits that perfectly,” she says.

Botanists at the Morris Arboretum and 11 other institutions are participating in an effort to digitize images and data associated with hundreds of thousands of plants collected in the Mid-Atlantic region during the past three centuries. The project, supported by the National Science Foundation and headed by the Arboretum’s Cynthia Skema, aims to provide a foundation for investigating how urbanization affects plants.

May School of Arts and Sciences graduate Joshua Jordan of Warrington, Pa., was awarded a Fulbright English Teaching Assistant grant. He will spend nine months as an instructor at the Vivekananda School Dehradun, an independent bilingual experimental school near the Himalayan foothills. He also hopes to volunteer in the area of economic empowerment and to improve his Hindi and sitar playing.

Sixteen Penn undergraduates of diverse religious and ethnic backgrounds visited Israel together as part of Penn Hillel’s inaugural Encompass program. The trip was led by Rabbi Josh Bolton, director of the Jewish Renaissance Project at Penn Hillel, and Stephen Kocher, the University’s associate chaplain. The idea, Bolton says, was to “build bridges” between groups that are not often in direct dialogue and to gain a deeper understanding of the real complexities of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

For five years, the Urban Youth Lacrosse Jamboree has brought young athletes from West Philadelphia to Penn for a weekend of competition, team-building, and fun each spring. Working directly with collegiate coaches and athletes helps the youth envision themselves as college students.
