Good morning from Boston.

Every day, our Senate chamber echoes with the diverse voices of visitors who spend their time learning about and weighing in on the critical issues facing our country today.

This spring, visitors have debated our nation’s path forward on comprehensive immigration reform, gun safety legislation, energy development, and more.

We have seen a keen interest in people of all ages in understanding the public policy solutions being proposed by our leaders to address these challenges, and a genuine desire to know how they, as community members, can be effective in driving change at the local, state, and federal level.

Our visitors leave feeling empowered to turn their insightful conversations into action – an outcome truly reflective of the vision that Senator Kennedy had for this Institute, and our American democracy.

I am continually proud to be here at the Institute, and inspired by the important work ahead. Be sure to watch some of the incredible programs we convened here this spring, and consider joining us this summer for one of our unique and interactive tours.

In 2018, the Institute hosted speakers and leaders from all walks of life for engaging conversations on Columbia Point. Former Senate Majority Leader George Mitchell spoke on the anniversary of the Good Friday Agreement in partnership with the Consulate General of Ireland, the British Consulate-General Boston, and Irish Network Boston; Pete Souza took us through his recently-released book Obama: An Intimate Portrait; the hosts of Pod Save America joined Massachusetts Senator Elizabeth Warren for a sold-out conversation; elected leaders from Massachusetts Lieutenant Governor Karyn Polito to New Hampshire Senator Maggie Hassan gave inspiring remarks at our Women in Leadership Conference; 82nd U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder talked gerrymandering with Jeffrey Toobin; and Congressman Joe Kennedy III shared his hopes for bipartisanship in Congress.

A BUSY SCHOOL YEAR COMES TO A CLOSE
THOUSANDS OF STUDENTS VISITED THE INSTITUTE
As June comes to a close, the Institute is reflecting on another busy and exciting school year. This year, more than 21,000 students visited the Institute to take on the role of legislators and debate key issues driving national debates. From Comprehensive Immigration Reform to the Assault Weapons Ban of 2017, future leaders from across the Commonwealth and the nation worked with their peers to learn how our government works, and negotiate solutions to policy challenges facing the Senate.

Enthusiasm for civic education is building across Massachusetts, and the Institute is proud to offer immersive educational experiences at no cost to school groups from across the state. Thanks to the generosity of the Martin Richard Foundation, more than 30 schools in need of bus transportation visited the Kennedy Institute during the 2017-2018 academic year. PLAN YOUR VISIT

SENATE STAFF OFFICE EXHIBIT
Visitors are now able to view the new Senate Staff Office exhibit that features the exemplary work of Senator Edward M. Kennedy's staff, and the jobs involved in working in a United States Senator's office. Through a mixture of hands-on activities, video features, and office artifacts, visitors have the opportunity to hear firsthand stories from Senator Kennedy's staff and take on the role of those assigned with completing daily Senate office responsibilities.

THE SENATOR'S PAINTINGS
Many people are surprised to learn that Senator Edward M. Kennedy painted throughout his life. In the 1950's, he started painting alongside his brother Jack when the elder Kennedy was in the hospital with a bad back and was in need of some distraction. Senator Kennedy's paintings reflect his sincere love of the sea, sailing, and the Cape Cod shoreline. Prints of his paintings are on display at the Institute for visitors to enjoy during their tour.
