The Penn LGBT Center is one of the first such college resource centers in the country, with a 35-year legacy and, since 2002, its own building on campus. “I want to make sure the Penn LGBT Center is a place where everybody feels they belong,” says Erin Cross, the Center’s director.

Research published in Science reveals that a non-invasive blood test might have the ability to determine a baby’s gestational age in utero and predict preterm delivery. Michal Elovitz of the Perelman School of Medicine contributed to the study, which aligns with her research interests. “My goal has been to first understand what may cause preterm birth,” she says, “so we can then develop effective and precise therapeutic agents.”

For the past decade, Ebony Elizabeth Thomas of the Graduate School of Education has been exploring representations of slavery in children’s literature, as well as the questions parents, teachers, and educators should consider when selecting books. She and her research team have compiled a database of 160 children’s books covering slavery published between 1970 and 2015.

Digital humanities scholars are orchestrating an epic crowdsourcing effort to sort and transcribe handwriting on thousands of documents, known as the Cairo Geniza, discarded hundreds of years ago. Through an innovative and pioneering website built by a Libraries team with the research platform Zooniverse, citizen scholars can help analyze the digitized texts, which are written in five Hebrew and three Arabic scripts.

Charles Howard (above) is not your average chaplain. The lover of hip-hop music, turtles, and tattoos grew up wanting to be a backup dancer but found his calling at Penn. Now he coordinates spiritual activities for students and serves as their listening ear. “He just has a way,” says the chaplain’s office manager, Mary O’Rourke LeCates, “of hugging you without hugging you.”

Following a string of successes, including the Ivy crown, the women’s basketball team will get ready for the 2018-19 season with an 11-day August trip to Spain and France. “A trip like this not only allows our players the opportunity to grow as a team on the basketball court,” says Head Coach Mike McLaughlin, “but also gives them a chance to explore different cultures, meet new people, and open their eyes to a world of possibilities.”

Eduardo Malinowski, a rising sophomore from Spring, Texas, has been named a Freshman All-American by Collegiate Baseball newspaper, the only Ivy League player so honored. Malinowski has also been selected Ivy League Rookie of the Year, Big 5 Rookie of the Year, First-Team All-Ivy, Second-Team All-ECAC, and Second-Team All-Big 5.
