With the cancelled Senate recess and new privacy rules that are threatening American businesses, C_TEC has been in overdrive working on a myriad of issues. First on privacy. Between the California law that Gov. Brown signed yesterday, GDPR and a public that is more concerned about privacy than ever before, the Chamber is coordinating a full court press on a response. The Chamber’s international policy team, the Center for Global Regulatory Cooperation, Institute for Legal Reform (ILR) and C_TEC are all working together to develop business friendly privacy principles. Be on the lookout for an invitation and information regarding a call on July 9th to discuss next steps. We’ll also be joined by NTIA, ITA and NIST for a privacy listening session on the 12th. C_TEC will continue to run an issue-ad campaign to encourage voters to call and write their U.S. Senator (https://t.e2ma.net/click/jobxnd/r2f0ql/n74z9q) in support of the AV Start Act. Approximately 1000 letters have already been sent to the Congress. If you’d like more information on our campaign, please contact Stacey (mailto:shutchinson@uschamber.com?subject=). (https://t.e2ma.net/click/jobxnd/r2f0ql/3z5z9q) (https://t.e2ma.net/click/jobxnd/r2f0ql/js6z9q) Earlier this month, C_TEC hosted an impressive event at the Golden1 Center – home to the Sacramento Kings. Verizon’s VP of smart communities, sports & entertainment, Lani Ingram, and the city’s CIO, Maria MacGunigal, kicked off the event with an intimate conversation about their successful public private partnership which is bringing a more connected universe to the residents and businesses of Sacramento. Ryan Montoya, the team’s CTO, chatted with Tim about his vision for the most connected arena in the country. We also had panel discussions on 5G, Smart Cities and Autonomous Vehicles. Last, but certainly not least, I spoke to the Memphis IT Council, thanks to an invitation from Regina Whitley, the council’s executive director. Memphis is at the forefront of emerging technology. For example, Memphis was one of 10 areas selected (out of the 149 who applied) to participate in the U.S. Department of Transportation's Drone Integration Pilot Program. The Memphis-Shelby County Airport Authority led the area's application process, working in partnership with the University of Memphis, Shelby County and the City of Memphis, Agricenter International and the Tennessee Department of Transportation Division of Aeronautics. They also partnered with private industry partners like FedEx Corp., General Electric Co. subsidiaries AirXOS and Avitas, Intel, Flirtey, 901Drones, Express Drone Parts and ForeverReady Productions. They are truly paving the way for UAS integration in our country. C_TEC is looking forward to going back this fall to showcase Memphis as part of our TecNation event series. Hope to see you soon – let me know if you have questions or would like to be more involved with C_TEC. Happy 4th! HERE Technologies is a global provider of location data, analytics and platform services. We have a robust customer base that operate across many industries and sectors. Our 3D mapping and location platform powers autonomous vehicles, unmanned aircraft systems (or “drones”), smart cities, fleets, freight, manufacturing logistics, as well as a host of IoT solutions. Our growing ownership consortium includes BMW, Daimler, Audi and Intel, as well as Bosch, Continental and Pioneer. Our approach is to be a neutral platform for the sharing and accessing of location-enriched data. Our mission is to enable the Autonomous World for everyone. What policy goals are a priority for your company for 2018? To ensure location data is understood as a critical element in a host of policy verticals, including autonomous vehicles, drones, IoT and any other policy undertakings that address the role of open data, privacy, security and related concerns. We seek the liberation of data held by federal, state and local governments that can and should support AVs, drones, smart cities and other use cases. We believe that no one entity can do it all, and therefore we support policies that encourage and facilitate the sharing of data amongst private sector entities seeking to develop complex technologies such as AVs. We endeavor to ensure that the value of consumer data is recognized and protected through industry-led standards and commitments. What role does HERE Technologies see itself playing in the future of the Autonomous World? For autonomous vehicles, HERE Technologies is the leading global provider of high-definition map data and connected vehicle services that are fundamental to the operations of AVs. As machine-driven vehicles seek to replace, and improve upon, human cognition we see ourselves providing the data and the platform to properly support the situational awareness of AVs. Similarly, with drones and IoT applications, as we make our HERE Reality Index – a dynamic, 3D “map” of our connected world – available to developers and the public, we will enable the panoply of technologies that will constitute the Autonomous World. How is your company making a positive impact on the community? HERE Technologies’ location data and Open Location Platform enable the safe operation of autonomous vehicles which will reduce the 90+% of accidents caused by human error. Our technologies enable the safe operation of drones which will bring enormous economic value, provide sources of connectivity between people and the broader society, and which will support in many instances the provision of emergency and disaster relief services. By making sense of the world through the lens of location we empower our customers and society to achieve better outcomes – from helping a city manage its infrastructure or a business optimize its assets to guiding drivers to their destination safely. What is one thing that people don’t understand about data that they should? We firmly believe in the power of open, aggregated and shared data. Data that is siloed across the private and public sectors must be liberated and combined in ways that create new insights, business and partnership models, and approaches to tackling systemic issues, from road safety to job access.
