I first learned the value of service from my parents back
when I was growing up in Chicago.

They taught me that it doesn't matter where you come from
or how much money you have, you can always afford to do
your part -- you can always make a difference for those
around you. They taught me that by giving back, each of us
can lift up our neighbors, improve our communities, and
help build a stronger country.

And when I first met Barack, I was struck by how strongly
he shared those same values and by how faithfully he lived
by them every day -- as a community organizer, and then
later as a civil rights lawyer and public servant. And as
we've built our life and our family together, those are the
values that have guided us -- and they're the values we're
working to pass on to our girls as well.

As we've been planning Barack's second
inauguration, we wanted service to be a central part of the
celebration, just like it was four years ago.

That's where you come in. We're asking all Americans to join
our family in honoring Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. by
volunteering during the National Day of Service on January 19th.
I hope that we can count on you to serve with us.
