Benjamin Franklin had a hand in the organization of what today are the American Philosophical Society, Pennsylvania Hospital, and the Library Company of Philadelphia. But his most famous institutional handiwork is the University of Pennsylvania. He was a primary founder of what is now Penn and served on the Board of Trustees until his death in 1790. Jan. 17 was the 313th anniversary of his birth.

A collaboration between the Penn Memory Center and the Curtis Institute of Music gives patients with any level of cognitive impairment, from mild decline to Alzheimer’s disease, the chance to interact with musicians. The hope is to improve anxiety and other mood concerns often associated with memory disorders.

It’s not just people who have received more prescriptions for opioids in recent years. According to a study led by the Perelman School of Medicine’s Jeanmarie Perrone and the School of Veterinary Medicine’s Dana Clarke, prescriptions for opioid medications for small animals seen at Penn Vet’s Ryan Hospital rose by 41 percent between 2007 and 2017. The findings suggest a need to extend opioid stewardship measures used by medical doctors to also include veterinarians, the authors say.

A drug approved by the FDA 65 years ago for blood-pressure control may aid in preventing cancer from spreading to distant organs. New research led by Serge Fuchs of the School of Veterinary Medicine revealed that the drug disrupted formation of a fertile environment for metastasis by protecting healthy cells from harmful vesicles released by tumors.

In a post-#MeToo world, investors are increasingly concerned with how companies treat the women who work for them. But identifying “good” companies is more complex than just “counting the number of women on a company’s board or in its C-suite,” according to Katherine Klein, Sandra Maro Hunt and grad student Shoshana Schwartz of the Wharton School, writing for CNN Business Perspectives. Instead, they propose, investors should “take a hard look at the representation, pay, health and satisfaction of the women who work there.”

The more opposed to genetically modified foods people say they are, the more they think they know about the subject, but the lower they score on a knowledge test about it. This is according to research from Paul Rozin of the School of Arts and Sciences, in collaboration with colleagues at the University of Colorado Boulder, Washington University in St. Louis, and the University of Toronto.

Goliath, a Great Pyrenees puppy, wasn’t gaining as much weight as he should. Diagnosed with an abnormal blood vessel in his liver, the dog was taken to the School of Veterinary Medicine’s Ryan Hospital, where Andreanne Cleroux performed a percutaneous transvenous coil embolization. “His recovery was quick and uneventful,” says Cleroux. “And from what we hear from his owner, it’s like he’s a different dog now.”

As part of the Penn Manuscript Collective, undergraduates like sophomore Henry Hung (center) from Hong Kong transcribe rare documents and original works by Walt Whitman in the University’s collection. Their discoveries will be included in an international symposium to be hosted at Penn this spring. This will be one of many events in a regional celebration, known as Whitman at 200, led by the Penn Libraries to mark the anniversary of the poet’s birth.

Renovations at Kelly Writers House to expand the front parlor and make it more technologically friendly are now complete. Architects and designers enclosed the front porch to increase seating capacity in what is known as the Arts Cafe. “We’ve been dreaming of this for years, and now we’ve done it,” says Al Filreis, faculty director.

Researchers from the lab of Daniel Mindiola in the School of Arts and Sciences have created a way to make “impossible molecules” inside water- and oxygen-free environments. These molecules have the potential to make chemical reactions more efficient and sustainable. Lauren Grant, lead author and Ph.D. student, says, “It’s probably been the most difficult molecule that I’ve ever made.”

Duncan Watts, a pioneer in the use of data to study networks, will become the 23rd Penn Integrates Knowledge Professor on July 1. In announcing his appointment, President Amy Gutmann said he “stands at the epicenter of these fields. He is a research pioneer who has written the book on these now-burgeoning disciplines, which did not even have names when Duncan and his colleagues wrote the seminal papers that brought them into existence.”

Dennis Culhane of the School of Social Policy & Practice predicts that the number of elderly homeless people will likely triple during the next decade. While the situation is dire, Culhane says that, with the appropriate funding, it could improve. “We can either just maintain people who are in poor health and in a state of homelessness, with crowded emergency rooms, hospitals, and nursing homes, or we could use the money wisely to actually solve their homelessness problem and reduce the total costs,” he says.
