Our class, "The Art of Advocacy In and Out of Government", includes 16
graduate students from Georgetown's School of Foreign Service and the focus
is on all aspects of advocacy in public policy with a focus on foreign
affairs. We are studying how individuals and organizations work to shape
public policy; how policymakers and staff manage and practice advocacy as
part of their day-to-day work; what constitutes effective advocacy, what
are the tools of the trade, etc. Because we're in the School of Foreign
Service we try to focus on international issues and policies, but a good
deal of our class addresses domestic matters. Rather than give you a
full-blown description here on email, I have attached a copy of our
syllabus - this provides a detailed outline of the course.

Next Tuesday will be our second session of the semester and we have set up
this class as an opportunity for the students to have discussions with
"real world" advocates and policymakers who have experience in and out of
government. The idea is to give students a window into the real world
before we dive into case studies. Hunter and I will moderate the
discussion. We'll probably start by asking you to describe your background
and what you do now. We'll ask a few questions about your work and
experience, then we'll open up to questions and discussion from the
students.

The class is held in Room 202 of the Intercultural Center (ICC) at

When you enter the ICC building through the main entrance, room 202 is
downstairs. We meet from 5pm until 7:30pm and your segment of the class
would be from 5-6pm, so it would be great if you could arrive a few minutes
before 5. We'll meet you at the entrance of the building.
