Kicking off the "Rust Belt Roadshow" and the Georgetown Labor-Capital Fellowship

We're thrilled to have participated in two new Heartland partnerships that both
launched this month:

* Fighting for a High Wage America: Reinvesting in Innovation and the Industrial
Heartland event: As we reported in the last Espresso, the Century Foundation
officially launched a new initiative on Tuesday, June 13, to find ways to bring
high wage work back to America's Heartland. A standing room audience of 150
Congressional leaders, staff-members and participants attended the sold-out
event held at the U.S. Senate offices at the Capitol Visitors' Center. Here,
Monica Rondon, an intern with Century, provides a great summary of the event, which
featured Heartland Tom Croft as a speaker. This prestigious event is the lead off
for what is hoped to be a series of town hall meetings across the industrial midwest-the
"Rust Belt RoadShow"-- starting with Pittsburgh in mid-June and a possible appearance
by Steelworkers President Leo Gerard. Join us on the Road!

* The Heartland-Georgetown Labor-Capital Fellowship was kicked off at the end
of May and early June with an initial Fellowship Orientation for four of the
seven students who have signed up. The mission of this project is to identify
and educate a new generation of capital stewards and responsible investors.
This cutting-edge fellowship is placing a seven students in 8 week field practicums
with responsible investment funds and capital stewardship offices. A select group
of important investment, labor, business and academic leaders provided a stirring
set of learning sessions for the fellows as part of the Orientation. If you're interested

"High-Wage America Project" Takes Aim at Revitalizing American Manufacturing
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

How can the United States recreate high-wage, secure jobs for all Americans? That's
the question being asked by the "High-Wage America Project" led by The Century Foundation's
(TCF) Bernard L. Schwartz Rediscovering Government Initiative (RGI). The initiative
kicked off on June 13, 2016, at the "Fighting for a High-Wage America: Reinvesting
in Innovation and the Industrial Heartland" event on Capitol Hill. Sponsored by
TCF, RGI, the Northeast-Midwest Institute, the National Call to Action, and the
Steel Valley Authority (SVA), the event brought experts, advocates, political leaders,
industry and labor partners together to explore proposals to create good jobs for
Americans. The event also presented research on "Why Manufacturings Jobs Are Worth
Saving," charting the 945,000 job rebound in a sector that continues to deliver
good jobs to Americans, especially in the nation's heartland.
Congressional Leaders Embrace Century's Call for New High-Wage Strategies for the
Heartland
Senator Bob Casey (D-PA) and Congressmember Marcy Kaptur (D-OH) delivered the opening
remarks of the program. Senator Casey discussed the evolving nature of the relationship
between wages and productivity in America and the implications it sets for workers.
After World War II, wages and productivity grew in tandem. However, since 1973,
productivity has grown while wage growth has been stagnant. Casey was also concerned
about the volatility of worker's incomes. A 2015 Federal Reserve paper found that
in the two preceding years, almost a quarter of male workers and 43 percent of female
workers experienced at least a 25 percent decrease in earnings. He suggested that
the United States needs an overarching trade policy that could guide trade negotiations
and bring wage stability and growth back to America. Educating the Next Generation of Capital Stewards
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

As a partnership between Heartland Capital Strategies (HCS) and Georgetown University's
Kalmanovitz Initiative for Labor and the Working Poor (KI), we've launched an exciting
new "Labor-Capital Fellowship" this Summer of 2017 aiming to:

* Educate the next generation of capital stewards
* Create a more diverse pipeline of talent
We have seven students in all who are interning over the summer with five host organizations:
KPS Capital Partners, AFL-CIO Housing Investment Trust, ULLICO, LIUNA, and Smart
Growth America.

Alliance and Blue Wolf Capital Partners.
Four of the Fellows attended a 3-day intensive orientation session at Georgetown.
Next on the agenda for the Fellows is a train trip and field study in New York City.
