I'd defer to Michelle and Johnnie of course but I'd just proceed with caution and the awareness that he can be volatile but not spend too much energy avoiding an otherwise popular personality in SA. I suspect he'll be on better behavior now and may stick to the Mugabe-esque crowd.

Also, not to jump in again before Michelle or Johnnie have time but again in case no one else has flagged- Mrs. Mandela is, I assume, Graca Machel, former first lady of Mozambique and still an eminent political figure in Africa- as a member of The Elders (with Kofi Annan and Jimmy Carter), she is often involved in mediating various high-level political issues. She's said some controversial things about climate change and the West's "big brother" role in Africa but is generally widely respected and a good person to talk to about Africa issues.
