Hello,

When people ask me how I handle the time when Todd's on the campaign trail, I think, "He's in Des Moines, not Anbar Province. He'll be back Sunday."

You see, right after we got married, he was deployed to Egypt. After our oldest child was born, Todd was deployed to Iraq. Now he's serving in Bulgaria with the U.S. Army Reserve.

Todd's never been afraid to do his part, and that is one thing I appreciate about him. While Todd's been gone, I've tried to do some of the campaigning before he returns next week. I figure if I do well, great. If I bomb, maybe he will get some sympathy votes.

Last Thursday, at the Iowa Democratic Party's Hall of Fame dinner, I spoke to committed activists and elected officials from around the state about why Todd's the leader Iowa needs now. A few people have asked how they could see it. I didn't have it recorded, but someone was nice enough to give me access to it.

There's a lot Todd doesn’t bring up about his service in conversation, but if you ask him, he can tell you about weapons and tanks, scary experiences and sad memories -- things that are completely foreign to our daily lives.

But bravery isn't isolated to war zones.

I remember we once sat for a family photo for a church directory. Todd was running late, because he had come from the bedside of a dying woman who wanted to make a will. And while the portrait itself didn't turn out well, I still smile when I come across it. It is a reminder that Todd didn’t hurry and turn away from the woman’s suffering; he did what he could to help.

The past few months he has traveled the state and seen hardships of everyday Iowans. He doesn’t turn away, and he doesn’t forget.

It's that dedication to service that's made him so successful as a soldier, a lawyer, a father, and a legislator. It's that dedication that won him reelection even in the Republican dominated election cycles of 2014 and 2016. And it's that dedication that will make him so successful as governor.

I want to make sure that more Iowans know the Todd I know, which is why I spoke on his behalf at the Hall of Fame dinner, and why I'm hoping you'll watch and share my speech with a friend.
