House Majority Whip Steve Scalise, who was severely injured in a shooting last month at a suburban Washington baseball field, has been readmitted to intensive care because of concerns related to infection, according to a statement late Wednesday from MedStar Washington Hospital Center.

"Congressman Steve Scalise has been readmitted to the Intensive Care Unit at MedStar Washington Hospital Center due to new concerns for infection," read the statement, released by the Louisiana Republican's office. "His condition is listed as serious. We will provide another update tomorrow, July 6."

Scalise was critically wounded in the June 14 shooting along with two police officers, a congressional aide and a lobbyist during a GOP practice in advance of the annual congressional baseball game. The third-ranking House Republican had been transferred out of the ICU on June 22, and MedStar said at the time that Scalise was in "fair condition."
