Truman National Security Project ! At the end of each month, we highlight some of the advocacy work, events, and other activities of the Truman community across the nation. This month, we focused on the great stories and work that emerged from our annual conference.


Kristine ReevesDuring the Member Awards lunch at TruCon17, State Representative for Georgia’s 81st House District Scott Holcomb delivered the Harry S. Truman Extraordinary Impact Award to 2016 Truman Political Partner Kristine Reeves.


Kristine is currently the State Representative for Washington’s 30th Legislative District. Winning this seat, however, was far from an easy road. When first approached, Kristine was unsure if she wanted to run for office. It was her fellow Truman class members, as they got to know her at their cohort’s orientation little more than a year ago, who encouraged her to say ‘yes’ to running. And it was an outpouring of logistical support from her Truman Chapter in Seattle and a fundraising surge at TruCon16 that helped her win a tough primary and take on an incumbent in the general.


This race came down to the wire well after Election Day—it was one of the last in the nation to be called, but by a razor thin margin, Kristine succeeded. By winning her seat, Kristine kept the Washington State House under the control of the Democratic Party. And that, in turn, held the nationwide line at 32 state legislatures completely under Republican control, which is exactly one fewer than the number needed to call a constitutional convention and start proposing amendments.


We were truly honored to recognize Washington State Representative Kristine Reeves for her extraordinary achievements and dedication to fighting for the Truman worldview.

TruCon17: Send Your Mission

Last weekend, Truman Center for National Policy and Truman National Security Project hosted our annual conference, TruCon17: Send Your Mission, in Washington, DC.


Our conference was named for the motto of the 129th Field Artillery Regiment—Harry Truman’s own U.S. Army unit, whose unconditional, matter-of-fact ethos of “Send Your Mission” served them well as they fought across Europe throughout World War I one hundred years ago. Today, as American values are under assault and a retreat from leadership in the world is underway, Truman is gearing up to fight for our worldview like never before.


Truman invited leaders in this fight to share their insights with our membership. Ambassador Wendy Sherman, who was a driving force in negotiating the P5+1’s nuclear agreement with Tehran, joined us for a wide-ranging conversation on tough foreign policy questions across the world from Iran to North Korea, as well as on the personal qualities integral to effective leadership. After delivering remarks, Congressman Adam Schiff held a conversation with Truman Center Board Member Greg Craig on the ongoing

oversight of the Trump Administration with respect to the Putin regime's interference in the 2016 election. They also touched on crucial topics such the legal justification for use of force in Syria and the big picture view of America's engagement and leadership on the world stage.


We also heard from a diverse slate of four members of the Truman community who shared their “stories of self,” discussing their unique paths and work through Truman on the issues close to their hearts. Fellow Anka Lee shared his experiences as an immigrant and naturalized U.S. citizen, encouraging others to set the next generation of strivers up for success in this tough, interconnected world. Partner Anastasia Kessler-Dellaccio discussed her path in the aftermath of the 2016 presidential election to highlight how resiliency and flexibility in the midst of the unexpected will give rise to great opportunity. Fellow Sherry Hakimi told us the story of her mother, who came to the U.S. during the Iranian Revolution, in order to emphasize how personal history shapes and motivates us
to fight for essential causes like gender equality. Finally, member of the Defense Council Jason Cain talked about his time in the U.S. Army and the home Truman became for him after he left, explaining how the shared experiences, mentorship, and community he found here ignites a torch that we all now carry.
