I hope you all have some fun planned for the upcoming weekend!
We request an authorization to spend up to $8500 this FY and up to $8500 for next FY to bring on a fellow from the Public Allies Program. As we’ve discussed previously, a Public Ally<http://publicallies.org/delaware/> is a four day a week, 8 hours a day, fellow partially underwritten by AmeriCorps. Essentially, we pay 50% of their salary, AmeriCorps pays 50% plus child care, health insurance, etc. The fellow is completely focused on capacity building projects, and spends four days with a partner organization (us) and one day with PA staff (working on leadership development). Tony Allen initially suggested we pursue a Public Ally fellow, and our initial budget for FY 17 included $19,000 for the position. As you’ll recall, we reallocated that money to hire our programming coordinator. BBF is at a critical juncture in our growth. We have a desire to serve more children and adults with our programming, and the need clearly exists. But given our schedules with program delivery and fundraising, it is difficult to reach out to the many organizations and get them on the schedule. We also have not been able to spend necessary time to find new partners and providing the trainings for them. Our PA would do three things to directly impact our ability to serve more people:
1.Recruit and maintain a network of trained volunteers to deliver our internet safety and Stewards of Children programming, Currently, we have three people trained to deliver the internet safety program and 6 folks we truly trust to deliver Stewards. Our PA would focus 30% of her time on developing and organizing volunteers.

2. Create a database of youth serving organizations in the state, and begin to develop relationships with these organizations. We’ve been able to train over 2,300 adults in Stewards and speak to over 6,000 kids about internet safety in the last 15 months. That’s the low hanging fruit - essentially people Patty and I know who call us for help or whom we call offering our services. We have met with law enforcement leaders in Delaware and are beginning to implement training to law enforcement. But to reach our goal of training 5,000 adults in Stewards and speaking to 8,000 kids this year, we need to expand the universe of organizations we serve. Our PA would spend 30% of her time on this objective.

3. Measure the effectiveness of our internet safety program and help improve it. The deck we use for our internet safety programs was developed by the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children. It’s fantastic. But it hasn’t changed at all since we started delivering it in April of 2016. By collecting feedback in a formal way, we can improve upon the content and deliver a more effective program - making the programming more enticing to partner organizations. Our PA would spend 30% of her time on this objective.
4. As you are aware we have several events coming up in 2017, and early 2018. We would ask our PA to allocate 10% of her time on supporting the three of us as we work to make these events a success.
9 different candidates have been interviewed and there are two possible candidates; resumes are attached. Both would be great fits for the BBF. Dominique Oppenheimer just graduated from UD and is as outgoing and industrious as we could ever hope for. Pei-Jen Hickey is a mother of two kids (14 and 12) and looking to start a third career in the non-profit world (she’s been in tech/IT sales and was a full time mom). Both bring an entrepreneurial work ethic and are more than effective communicators. Most importantly, both are passionate about child protection and bring different networks of potential volunteers.
While we recognize that this is not an insignificant expense, it is an outstanding opportunity for an incredibly reasonable cost. In order to serve more people, and create a record of effectiveness, we need to build our capacity to serve people. In order to build a more successful program we need more volunteers and organizations as partners. The PA will also collect data on the effectiveness of our internet safety program, which is something future funders and grant makers require. The outlook on fundraising is good; while slightly down at this point (the first two quarters of FY 17) – it is likely that we will exceed projections. This is because our of our 5k race in November and increased outreach to the $5-$25k donors now that the JRB Foundation is established.
