Dear H,
Who doesn't like trains? Now that we have a short break from the demolition derby,
we thought it would be fun to pass along some light summer reading about trains
and train rides:
David Dayen at the American Prospect has a wonderful piece on the revival of a citywide
rail system in LA. In "The Great Los Angeles Revolt Against Cars," he cites the
incredible blue-green coalition that won the popular referenda and decades long
campaign to raise $120 billion for 37 light rail, subway, bus rapid transit, bike
and highway improvement projects. These projects are helping to transform LA, guaranteeing
local production, local hiring and affordable housing in the process.
Patrick Doherty, our Heartland friend in Cleveland, has a short piece on building
walkable communities, enabled by strategic impact investments and new inner city
rail and trolleys (remember those?), etc. This piece, "How investors can mobilize
against climate change" originally ran in GreenBiz. Patrick is working to stand
up a financing mechanism to build future city transit projects.
Finally, in "Dutch Trains Are World's First to Run on 100% Wind Power," Lorraine
Chow of EcoWatch describes the amazing transformation of Dutch rail to wind power
provided by Eneco, a sustainable energy supplier (which counts among its financing
partners the PRI signer Rabobank).

The Great Los Angeles Revolt Against Cars

L.A. voters have chosen to tax themselves to build a citywide rail system. Can rail
also resurrect the city's long-vanished middle class?
On May 20, 2016, residents of downtown Los Angeles boarded a passenger rail car
and traveled 15 miles west to the water's edge-something no Angeleno had been able
to do since the early 1950s. The new Expo Line extension, colored aqua because of
its connection to the ocean, prompted memories of the old Pacific Electric streetcar,
which traveled practically the same route before the line was shut down in 1953.
"My grandparents talked about going to the beach on dates from Mid-City," says
Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti. "I wanted to do that for my grandkids."
Denny Zane was on the Santa Monica platform at 4th Street and Colorado Avenue that
day. He'd been mayor of the beach town in 1990, when the Los Angeles County Transportation
Commission Oater known as the Metropolitan Transportation Authority, or Metro) had
purchased the Expo Line right-of-way from the Southern Pacific Railroad. City fathers
had been so sure the new line would get built that they bought space for a maintenance
yard at Bergamot Station, temporarily leasing it out as an arts center. Twenty-six
years later, nobody wanted to evict the galleries. "So the maintenance yard gets
put on Stewart and Exposition, across the street from my house!" Zane says. "I'm
really having to be the good citizen." to confront climate change. Instead, the national climate change conversation centers
on whether the United States will pull out of the Paris Agreement and whether we
have missed the window to keep the planet's warming below 2 degrees Celsius.
While elections have consequences, this does not have to be one of them. Long-term
investors at home and abroad are sitting on trillions of assets under management.
Trillions more are sitting in negative or zero-coupon securities. Instead of resolving
to play defense, investors need to go on the offense. It's time to begin to shape
the 21st century economy ourselves - by investing in the long term.

Dutch Trains Are World's First to Run on 100% Wind Power

The Netherlands, aka Windmill Country, is now operating 100 percent of its electric
trains with wind energy.
As of Jan. 1, 600,000 daily train passengers have been traveling completely carbon
neutral, according to an announcement from the Netherlands' principal passenger
railway operator, NS.
Dutch electric trains are running on 1.2 billion kilowatt-hours of wind energy supplied

trains are still running on diesel.
NS and Eneco first announced their plan of a wind-powered railway in 2015 in order
to drastically slash train ride emissions. Their original goal was to transition
