Friend – our state has long benefitted from a commitment to renewable fuels and clean energy. However, that could all be coming to an end if recent actions by Iowa Republicans and President Trump’s EPA are any indication.

Last week, the AP reported on a Republican scheme to undermine the Iowa Energy Center, which has played a key role in making Iowa a national leader in renewable energy, as well as supporting our farmers and rural economies. The same week, the EPA announced proposed changes to the amount of renewable fuels mandated under the Renewable Fuel Standard.

Rather than doing everything possible to encourage and attract renewable energy jobs to the state, Republicans are making deals behind closed doors to benefit corporate interests, while hurting the livelihood of so many Iowans with jobs in the renewable energy sector.

We can’t let them continue taking us backwards by relying on the dirty fuels of the past.

As a member of the Government Oversight Committee, it was my duty to get to the bottom of the Republican’s plan to defund the Iowa Energy Center, which is why I requested that emails be released to shine a light on this scandal. When the well-being of more than 71,000 Iowans who work in the renewable industry is at risk, I knew I had to step up.

That number of people employed in our energy economy has the potential to only grow further in the years ahead. This is an industry that has grown much faster than nearly any other field, and is one that many rural communities rely on to offer skilled, high-paying jobs. It’s too important to our state and our people to let shady backroom deals put it at risk.

It will take leadership to make sure that we’re advancing and protecting this industry. And it’s leadership that we’ve seen little of from Rod Blum.

I’m ready to continue fighting for Iowa’s energy economy, to be a voice for the tens of thousands of Iowa farmers who depend on a strong RFS, and the skilled workers who have been able to provide a good life for themselves and their families due to the growing wind and solar industries.
