Biographical Information

Francis J. Ricciardone is the newly-designated Ambassador of the United States to Turkey. He previously served as Deputy Ambassador at the U.S. Embassy is Kabul, Afghanistan. Ambassador Ricciardone was the U.S. Ambassador to Egypt from 2005 to 2008 and U.S. Ambassador to the Philippines and Palau from 2002 to 2005. He has served two multinational military deployments: as Chief of the Civilian Observer Unit of the Multinational Force and Observers in the Sinai Desert, and as Political Advisor to the U.S. and Turkish Commanding Generals of Operation Provide Comfort, based in Turkey and operating in Iraq. At the U.S. Department of State, he directed the 9/11 Task Force of the Coalition Against Terrorism and served as Secretary of State Madeleine Albright's Special Coordinator for the Transition of Iraq.

Ambassador Ricciardone graduated summa cum laude from Dartmouth College in 1973. Upon graduation, he received a Fulbright Scholarship for teaching and study in Italy. He speaks Arabic, Turkish, French and Italian.
