David Pogue (nyt) actually just wrote a column about cameras today,
not sure what you're looking to spend but in the 400$ range are the
options outlined in this story,
Canon s95 (which is what hunter has I think)
Panasonic Lumix lx5
and Samsung's TL500

also ralph was just talking about the canon G12 the other day as being
sort of a nice bridge between an SLR and a point and shoot (but it's
quite large relative to the other three and wouldn't fit in her pocket
as well so she might not carry it as much).
