Strauss Ball Report Patrons are still airborne after the Strauss Ball which took place in the Fairways Hotel, Dundalk last Saturday night. The Ball which is organised annually by the Cross Border Orchestra of Ireland (CBOI) was supported by over 200 patrons who despite the recession and adverse weather conditions, travelled from all over the Border region, Dublin, Kildare, Armagh, Antrim and further afield to attend. In particular it was great to welcome the CBOI’s primary corporate sponsor Mr Paul McGowan, Hilco UK who is a huge supporter of this great orchestra. This year the CBOI was celebrating its 15th Anniversary and so in addition to a champagne reception, and seven course banquet, patrons were treated to music by the full 120 member symphony orchestra, making it one of the most magical, memorable and special occasions imaginable. Directed by Maestro Gearid Grant, the orchestra sounded spectacular. One guest commented, “I don’t think I have ever seen as much talent per square foot on a stage in my life”. The versatility of the evening was very evident, as the orchestra moved from Strauss to Rock‘n’Roll effortlessly. Dancers were swept around the floor by the energy of the music. Another supporter said "our limbs had no choice but to celebrate the sound and dance". Daire Stanley provided a special treat with a performance of some Big Band music which he executed with great style and panache. Emmanuel Lawler who was a thoroughly entertaining and engaging Master of Ceremonies for the evening thanked all the guests who attended the Ball and congratulated them on their great support of the CBOI and the Arts in Ireland. Christmas spirit was very evident on the night with over 20 prizes generously sponsored by local businesses. A €1,000 voucher for Waterford Crystal was won by Siobhn Ni Dhill, Co Meath while other prizes included several €250 gift vouchers for Denby. Other sponsors of spot prizes included the Claremont Restaurant, Blackrock, the Break, Blackrock, Haggardstown Garden Centre, Edge Hair Salon, Dundalk; Felda, Hair At No. 1, Carlingford; Windsor Restaurant, Dundalk; New Faces, Dundalk; Brian McQuillan Pharmacy, Blackrock; Bay Tree Restaurant, Carlingford; Cherville B&B, Drumalee, Cavan; Danucci Chocolates, Fitzpatrick’s Restaurant, Cooley. Councilor Jim Darcy sponsored the chocolates, while Noel Sweeney and Cooley Distillery supplied personalized miniatures. Great credit is due to the Fairways Hotel as the food and service on the night were exceptional. The Ball room and entrance to the hotel were specially decorated for the occasion by Catriona Hughes, Ravensdale, creating a magical atmosphere and adding to the sense of excitement and anticipation. Special credit is due to the CBOI Parents Association committee for their huge efforts in organising the ball.
