Delegates will discuss Asia’s role in global financial markets, China’s domestic market, the internationalisation of the renminbi and how “green” technologies can stimulate growth. UK R&D dissected The Future Industry Forum discusses whether UK research and development will be damaged by government budget cuts. The speaker at the London event is Andrew Miller MP, who chairs the Commons science and technology committee. Eurogroup in discussion Finance ministers of the eurogroup, those countries whose currency is the euro, meet for an informal discussion in Brussels. Future energy analysed The World Future Energy Summit begins in Abu Dhabi, focusing on the renewable energy and environmental industries. It includes a conference, exhibitions and corporate events (until January 20). Australia open for tennis The Australian Open tournament begins in Melbourne, the first of the year’s four majors. US national holiday The US takes a national holiday to mark Martin Luther King Day. Tuesday JANUARY 18 Iraq inquiry resumes The UK inquiry into the Iraq conflict that began in 2003 holds further public hearings in London (until February 4). Among the witnesses due to return for further questioning are Tony Blair, the former prime minister, and Jack Straw, the former foreign secretary. Ecofin council meets The European Union’s economic and financial affairs council meets in Brussels. The economic and financial programme for the next six months and the recent introduction of the euro in Estonia are featured on the agenda. Mortgage risks assessed The UK Council of Mortgage Lenders holds its annual mortgage risk conference in London. It will consider the effects of factors such as falling house prices, fewer mortgage transactions and changing demographics. Vienna hosts forum The Euromoney Central and Eastern European Forum in Vienna assembles the region’s financiers, investors, politicians and entrepreneurs to discuss economic and financial issues over two days. Wednesday JANUARY 19 US-China summit Hu Jintao, China’s president, begins a state visit to the US by holding talks in Washington with his counterpart, Barack Obama. The White House says the visit is designed to increase co-operation between the two powers. Tensions on the Korean peninsula are likely to be discussed. Northern premiers meet The prime ministers of the UK, Sweden, Denmark, Finland, Norway, Iceland, Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania meet in London for a two-day summit on the challenges facing northern European economies. Business environment The Conference on Business Dynamics in Brussels presents the results of a European Commission study on how national procedures to start, license, transfer or liquidate a company affect the level of entrepreneurial activity in Europe. Investment prizes Senior investment bankers from across the world gather in London for the International Financing Review Awards ceremony and dinner. Biographical debate A debate titled “Political Memoirs: Egotistical or Educational?” is staged by the Hansard Society in London. The speakers are the veteran UK politicians Tony Benn and Baroness Shirley Williams. Art for sale in London London Art Fair features leading names of 20th-century British art, contemporary works by emerging artists and a photography exhibition (until January 23). Monte Carlo race hits 100 The Monte Carlo Rally sets off in the Ardèche region of France during the event’s centenary year, with drivers racing towards the finish in Monaco (on January 22). Thursday JANUARY 20 Curtain up at Sundance The Sundance Film Festival, which champions independent films from around the world, opens in Park City, Utah (until January 30). Saturday JANUARY 22 Forum for innovation The annual Global Competitiveness Forum begins Riyadh (until January 25), focusing on innovation. The gathering includes global business leaders, politicians and academics. Cannes faces the music The MidemNet and Midem trade exhibitions for the record, music publishing and music video industries begin this weekend in Cannes (until January 26). Producers honoured The annual Producers Guild Awards are presented in Los Angeles for production achievements in film, television and the internet. Sunday JANUARY 23 Portuguese at the polls Voting takes place in the first round of Portugal’s presidential election. People on the move The Transportation Research Board’s annual meeting in Washington (until January 27) attracts transport professionals from around the world to its discussions and exhibitions.
