This month, JVC welcomes Jim Campbell, the new director of advancement. Jim, a Fordham University alumnus, was a JV in Newark in 1977. He returned to his alma mater and earned an MBA in finance in 1986. He has more than 25 years of experience working for higher education, healthcare, and consultingorganizations such asPrivileged Advisors, New England Baptist Hospital, Nantucket Cottage Hospital, The College of the Holy Cross, and Caritas Christi Health Care System. He served as director for JVC East's board from 1986 to 1994 and is still actively volunteering within his community.Jim hasfour children, Michael, Stephen, Matthew, and Grace, and lives with his wife, Anne, and family in Northborough, Massachusetts. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Check Your Mail The winter edition of JVC magazine is heading to your mailbox soon. With college applications turned in by fall, all that's left is to check the mail and hope for that tell-tale fat envelope. For students from lower-income sections of the country like South Los Angeles, college may seem out of reach, butthisJV is helping her students turn it into a reality. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ "The Verb" Julie DeMareo, JV in Los Angeles "Miss D, come read this!" The room was packed with students editing college application essays and submitting online applications before the deadline for the California state schools and the University of California. Since September, most afternoons you could find me in Computer Lab Two with Martinique and Antoinette, Verbum Dei High School's devoted college guidance counselors, working with the students. Verbum Dei, a Cristo Rey school located in the Watts neighborhood of South Los Angeles, is only graduating 47 seniors this year. That just means even more personal attention for the students who already enjoy learning in a supportive, close-knit environment. There is no doubt "the Verb" is a special place. Run by the Archdiocese of Los Angelesand the Jesuits since 2000 to serve low-income families, it has a dedicated faculty, administration, and staff who all wear multiple hats to support academics, sports, clubs, and school-spirit activities. I felt welcomed from the first time I walked through the high fencing onto its campus, which borders the Nickerson Gardens housing projects. Working at the Verb had been my first choice placement, and I am the first Jesuit Volunteer to assist in both the campus ministry and college guidance offices. I could tell I was going to love working here, but what would I contribute? My job involves a lot of necessary technical and administrative work, like preparing transcripts and researching scholarships, but interacting with students is the best part of my day. I meet with a specific group of twelve students to guide their college search, track their application progress, and help with essays. It has been so interesting to read the personal statements our students fill with life experiences in 500 words or less, which are so different from my own. I grew up in a white upper-middle-class family in the suburbs of Philadelphia, and my college-educated parents worked hard to put me and my siblings through a private Catholic prep school. My students are primarily African-American and Latino kids from the economically disadvantaged neighborhoods of South L.A. Many of their parents do not have college degrees, some struggle to speak English. Without our offices direction, most students would be navigating the process alone. But my students and I have one major thing in common: support networks of people who dearly love us. I credit my academic success and personal growth up until my present journey as a JV to my wonderful family and friends. Likewise, my students have family members who have made many sacrifices so they can attend Verb. With 2011 underway, our students have begun applications for financial aid and more private schools. Martinique and Antoinette run a tight ship, and by spring all members of senior class will be accepted somewhere. It will all be over in a few months, but for our seniors it is truly a new beginning. Although my students and I come from different places, they are learning the same values of social justice, spirituality, and openness to growth which led me to JVC. At graduation in June, I know I will watch our students receive their diplomas and understand I had a small part in helping them access a college education. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ This e-newsletter is being sent to you at Email.
