On February 2nd, Scot Anthony Robinson will be giving a presentation on substance abuse called Vision Warrior to all students in the Upper School. A former TV and movie actor, Scot has spoken to over 1 million educators, young people and families throughout the U.S. about real-world challenges that parents and students alike face. Scot’s theatrical approach helps to communicate his important message to students about the issues and consequences of drug and alcohol use/abuse while encompassing the themes of self-esteem, peer pressure, relationships and the importance of being true to one’s self. We will have a special schedule on this day as Scot will speak to each grade after the performance to debrief his presentation and allow students to ask questions and challenge messages they are given on a daily basis about substance use. Scot has spoken at Sidwell Friends before so we look forward to his return and the opportunity to experience, once again, the important work he does.
There will also be a Parent Workshop on the evening of February 2nd from 7-9pm (location TBD). If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Gaby Grebski, US Guidance Counselor. From the Admissions Office

10th and 11th Grade Peer Groups
The second parent peer group meetings of the year for 10th and 11th grades are coming soon.
10th grade's peer group will be Tuesday January 25th at 7:30 p.m. in the Upper School Crane Room.
11th grade's peer group will be Tuesday January 18th at 7:30 p.m. in the Upper School Crane Room.
Please join us for these wonderful opportunities to join with other parents in your grade and talk about non-academic issues of relevance to our children's well being. Peer groups are facilitated by parents in the grade and topics are determined by the parents in attendance that night. The peer group also provides a great chance to build relationships with the other parents in the grade.
We hope you will join us. If you have any questions, please contact Raina Fishbane or Jeanine Hull, the Upper School Community Health Initiative co-clerks.Friends in Deed: Stories of the Quaker Quest for Truth, Justice, and Equality
The All School Parents Association and Quaker Life Committees invite all parents to an evening with Susan Sachs Goldman on January 24, 2011, 7-9 pm in the Middle School Drama Room.
Susan holds a B.A. in Political Science from Wellesley College and an M.A. in American History from Brandeis University. She has enjoyed a longstanding interest in Friends’ history, beginning in graduate school and continuing through the education of her three children, all lifers at Sidwell Friends. She served on the Board of Trustees for eleven years, serving as Clerk for three.
Her experience at Sidwell Friends introduced her to a world of consensus, independent thinking, passionate concern, and respect for others. She believes that the history of Quaker social action in America is an inspiring story that is largely unappreciated -- and one that should be shared. She is just completing a book on this subject to be published later this spring. Read MoreA Call for Performers
Parents, do you ever hear your child and his/her friends belting out a popular song behind closed doors? Or is there perhaps a rock band that blasts forth in your basement? Do you ever hear singing coming from the shower? fFloor boards creaking from the dance maneuvers upstairs? Please, get the word to those kids having fun in an artistic way that ArtRageous would like to hear from them. We still have room at the Middle School and plenty of equipment at the ready to support any kind of act. So, come find your audience and email Maude Fish. She'll get back to you.ArtRageous Needs Volunteers!
Friends, Parents, Patrons, lend us your love of all things Art! ArtRageous (Sunday, Jan 30) promises to bring out the artist or art lover in you if you'll help us bring out the RAGE in ART! This SCHOOL-WIDE day of COMMUNITY and ART is fabulously fun, and it CANNOT happen without YOU! We are excited by a new venue this year - the beautiful Middle School - and it's going to be exhilarating to celebrate the arts in ways old and NEW in the cool Black Box Theatre, the professionally designed Art Studios, the inspiring Instrumental and Choral Classrooms - BUT WE NEED YOU. Set up (morning), Clean up (4-5:30), Assisting Art Stops and other events (1-4) - we've got a place only YOUR SHOES will dance in! To reserve your place in making this happen, please contact Sarah Blake, and THANK YOU!

The 11th Grade Community Service Project preparation continues as the 11th graders bring in donated items for toiletry bags that will be handed out on the day of the event (January 23rd). The collection days conveniently coincide with this year's exam schedule, as follows:
Wednesday, January 12th (English exam day) = Shampoo and Conditioner
Thursday, January 13th (Math exam day) = Soap (bar soap or gel)
Students should leave their donated items in the collection box which will be set outside of the Dean of Students' office.
Students (as well as parents and other family members) have also been asked to visit this link to sign up for a shift to either serve food, or hand out toiletry bags and gently used winter clothing on the 23rd.
Students who would like to help out on January 17th to assemble the toiletry bags may sign up here.
