The video shown here (https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/checkpoint/wp/2016/04/13/russian-air-force-buzzed-u-s-navy-destroyer-repeatedly-in-baltic-sea/) of a Russian Su-24 attack jet roaring by the USS Donald Cook is indeed intense. Dive Deeper: Brookings’ Steven Pifer recently authored a commentary for the Cipher Brief that discusses the Pentagon’s views of Russia as a security threat (https://thecipherbrief.com/article/europe/modest-expectations-1090) . ** CSIS Task Force on Women’s & Family Health ------------------------------------------------------------ The US-Senegal partnership in women’s and children’s health has led to significant gains. A delegation from the CSIS Task Force on Women’s and Family Health visited Senegal in February 2016 and created a new interactive (http://vision2017.csis.org/senegal/) analysis of their trip. Dive Deeper: CSIS’s Janet Fleishman and Cathryn Streifel have a new report: Accelerating the Momentum: U.S. Support for Women’s and Family Health in Senegal (http://csis.org/publication/accelerating-momentum) . ** Anxious Financial World ------------------------------------------------------------ As Ken Brown reports (http://www.wsj.com/articles/why-china-still-makes-the-financial-world-anxious-1460561516) in today’s Wall Street Journal, the recent calm in China’s financial markets is unlikely to last. Dive Deeper: Last month, CSIS published a useful report, edited by Scott Kennedy: State and Market in Contemporary China (http://csis.org/publication/state-and-market-contemporary-china) . ** In that Number ------------------------------------------------------------ ** 13.7% ------------------------------------------------------------ The percentage of GDP that Saudi Arabia spends on defense. Now, what you can reassure them on is that you have a massive US military commitment in the Gulf. You have also very, very strong military ties. And whether you want to use the word alliance or not, you have one.” ------------------------------------------------------------ —CSIS Arleigh A. Burke Chair in Strategy Anthony Cordesman on President Obama’s upcoming travel to Saudi Arabia. Let’s talk about something current—and historical. Last weekend, the 1970s superstar blues-rocker Steve Miller was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Usually, artist who get inducted into the Hall are thrilled, overjoyed, some are even grateful. Not Miller. He’s not a happy camper. It turns out he threw a temper tantrum during and after the ceremony—trashing the Rock Hall, the guys who inducted him (the Black Keys), his record label, and the whole industry (who Miller had some choice words for.) Maybe he’s bitter because he’s been ripped off so many times by people in the music business who he says have made millions off of his work (I’m sure they have, Steve Miller Band’s “Greatest Hits” has sold over 13 million copies.) Maybe he’s just “rock and roll.” Or maybe he’s a jerk. Either way, I love Miller’s music and always have. So do most people I know. At the end of the day it’s all about what gets your toes tapping and puts a smile on your face. Steve Miller’s music does that. I was excited when my friends the Neville Brothers covered Miller’s classic ‘Fly Like an Eagle” in 1992. It’s almost as great as the original and I got to hear it in Art Neville’s garage on a tape before it made it into the record store (remember record stores?) The original “Fly Like an Eagle” is a masterpiece. Here’s one exceptional live version (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HoG7tgf3pxU) of it performed for a TV show in 1974. ** Feedback ------------------------------------------------------------ I always welcome and benefit from your feedback.
