Good Thursday morning. SCOOP - "Apple hires NFL, Biden veteran for key policy role," by Politico senior tech reporter Tony Romm: "Apple has hired Cynthia Hogan, a top [NFL] lobbyist ... and former aide to Vice President Joe Biden, as the new head of its Washington office - a major pickup for the tech giant as it continues to battle law enforcement officials who seek greater access to its customers' data. Hogan will become the iPhone maker's vice president for public policy and government affairs for the Americas, a role that oversees not only the company's D.C. operations but also Canada and Latin America.
"She'll report to Lisa Jackson, Apple's vice president of environment, policy and social initiatives, who previously led the Environmental Protection Agency. ... Apple finds itself center stage in a growing national debate about the balance between consumer privacy and law enforcement ... Hogan will take the helm of Apple's D.C. team on April 29, capping off a roughly two-year stint at the NFL. She joined the league in 2014, and most recently served as its executive vice president for government affairs. ... [S]he helped the NFL contend with a series of crises - from mounting concerns about head injuries to scandals involving player misconduct off the field. ...
"Her hiring by Apple is another sign of the company's steadily increasing presence in Washington." For Pros http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=9796523a4e8d41db16633ccb7f3e5c83b0e905356a74e6a0f9cf24b554c21291
DRIVING THE DAY - "Sanders gets his chance to shake up the race," by Annie Karni in New York: Tonight's "Brooklyn debate [CNN, 9 p.m.] is Bernie Sanders' last chance to shake up the race in a state where he must pull off a major upset to change the dynamics of the Democratic primary. ... The format of the debate is designed ... to allow the candidates to respond to recent attacks against each other. The focus ... will be on national issues that resonate in New York, like policing reform and Mideast policy. ... Clinton operatives sought to set a high bar by insisting anything short of a decisive win for Sanders on Tuesday could mark the real end of the race."

JUST POSTED - "Rove-backed PAC [American Crossroads] warms to Trump," by Ken Vogel and Eli Stokols: "Rove has publicly blasted Donald Trump as 'a petty man consumed by resentment and bitterness' with little gravitas and almost no chance of beating Hillary Clinton. But privately, the super PAC conceived by Rove is suggesting to its donors that it can help Trump win the White House and save Republican senators whose reelection bids could be jeopardized by having Trump at the top of the ticket. The apparent warming of the American Crossroads super PAC and its sister groups to Trump has become evident in its recent communications with donors, including a Tuesday afternoon 'investor conference
call' ...
"The phone call - which featured Rove, Crossroads officials and a pollster - laid out swing state polling and electoral map analysis done by the group showing circumstances in which Trump could beat Clinton, the Democratic presidential front-runner, in a general election." http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=9796523a4e8d41db1f378d3a35b94deef2b2e4e05d90cac90c42a59b0c9df30c

-"Kelly clears the air with Donald Trump" at Trump tower yesterday - Alex Weprin and Hadas Gold: "NBC News' Ayman Mohyeldin spotted Kelly entering Trump Tower ... 'We met for about an hour, just the two of us, and had a chance to clear the air,' Kelly said. 'Mr. Trump and I discussed the possibility of an interview. And I hope we will have news to announce on that soon.'" http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=9796523a4e8d41db5ff2ee857a6564bd8777fb6a16d267604f0e3b849442a605
INSIDE THE CAMPAIGNS - "Trump shuffles struggling campaign team," by Eli Stokols and Ken Vogel: "Wounded GOP front-runner Donald Trump is quietly setting up a parallel campaign structure, hiring known Republican fixers to professionalize his operation and sidelining his original team. Under the guidance of his new strategist Paul Manafort, Trump on Wednesday brought aboard Rick Wiley, Scott Walker's former campaign manager and a former senior party official well versed in the rule-making process that might decide the GOP nomination in a contested convention. Wiley's hiring demonstrates how quickly Manafort is consolidating his own power within Trump's campaign, gaining influence with the
candidate and exerting authority over those who had previously reported to campaign manager Corey Lewandowski ...
"The ... power struggle has led to a confusing situation for the staff in which there are essentially parallel organizational structures with separate, and often conflicting, chains of command ... 'There are two campaigns being run in Trump world. And nothing is happening because no one is sure who they're supposed to be listening to' ... [S]taffers have reported receiving different instructions from Lewandowski and Manafort, or officials loyal to them." http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=9796523a4e8d41db3a294450201ca7afd3c84c8032068bea9932face1631ca57
-"Trump campaign manager will not be prosecuted, sources say," by Hadas Gold and Florida Playbook author Marc Caputo: "The decision not to press charges against Corey Lewandowski is scheduled to be announced [this] afternoon by Palm Beach County State Attorney David Aronberg." http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=9796523a4e8d41dbb5eccb1b543ee0901de79e0422f04b8073c141cf552dae0b

EVENING JOE - "Joe Scarborough, anchor by day, rocker by night," by N.Y. Daily News' Jacqueline Cutler: "Scarborough's tie is gone, his shirt's unbuttoned and there's a guitar slung over his shoulder. ... [T]his is Nighttime Joe - and he's rocking. ... [A]t Prohibition, a bar and restaurant on Columbus Ave. near 84th St. [h]is rock band, Morning Joe Music, is now the regular Thursday night act here, going on at about 8:30 p.m., and playing for two and a half hours. ...
"When he turned 50, he started recording songs at home. Music has always been an important part of his life. His mother taught him piano beginning at age 5. 'I hated it,' he admits. 'But she taught me enough that I could teach myself guitar.' By 12, guitar ruled. [B]illionaire industrialist Charles Koch, chairman and CEO of Koch Industries, and his wife Elizabeth gave Ryan a total of $488,400 in March alone." http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=9796523a4e8d41dbd780f14284abc0305c37c40e971a4d364e1566cbd8b66f71

'I think, for both of us, finding out the president wanted advance copies of the episodes was an 'aha' moment,' [Dan] Weiss said. ... And did they say yes? 'Yes,' Weiss replied. 'He's the leader of the free world.'" http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=9796523a4e8d41db33e409f91ada1d1848fe34380058533363485bc35a1f56ff ... McCaskill: "'If Donald Trump exceeds 1,100 votes, he will become the nominee, even though he may not have 1,237,' Georgia lawyer Randy Evans told MSNBC's 'Morning Joe.' But if the GOP presidential front-runner doesn't surpass the 1,000-delegate mark, Evans said it could lead to a days-long contested convention. ... RNC spokesman Michael Short rebutted Evans, tweeting that the eventual nominee needs 1,237 delegates. 'Period. No ands, ifs or buts.'" http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=9796523a4e8d41dbd78213c61bf669537b65d38921dc3e51148b8ddcabcad39a
-WashPost 1-col. lead, "Cruz builds delegate support ... Senator secures votes for possible second ballot," by Ed O'Keefe (online: "Cruz likely to block Trump on a second ballot"): "Cruz is poised to pick up at least 130 more votes on a second ballot, according to a Washington Post analysis. That tally surpasses 170 delegates under less conservative assumptions - a number that could make it impossible for Trump to emerge victorious." http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=9796523a4e8d41db34c28049eebb1e716c38e8045f5cc56b61e2b01eacddf129

NINA TOTENBERG, on the NPR Politics Podcast, recalls the Clarence Thomas hearings: "I'm sitting at the Judiciary Committee hearing where they are voting on Thomas and I see that they all have the same envelope. And Biden [then chairman] starts talking about how the confirmation process should not be about rank gossip. And I go, what? What are you talking about? I go out and I start kicking tires. And eventually, I find out what it's about. I call up Anita Hill. She says she won't talk to me unless I have a copy of her affidavit. So I got it. And then I got her. I actually held the story for a day and a half, trying to get Biden to talk to me about what was going on."
-On the cost of breaking the story: "I was pilloried during this. I had one of the great stories of any reporter's life. I had worked very hard to get it. And the cost was enormous in terms of negative publicity and people trashing me a lot and senators yelling at me. At one point I had a driver at Nightline who went around the corner [and] stopped and he said to me ... 'Lady, you better get a gun.'"
-On being asked to do a cameo in HBO "Confirmation" movie, debuting Saturday at 8 p.m.: "They [HBO] wanted me to re-enact my memory of the questions I asked her, so they could have me asking her questions on the phone the first time we talked and things like that.
