From: Raimundo, Tria [mailto:traimundo@thechicagocouncil.org] Sent: Friday, April 08, 2016 11:45 AM Cc: Black, Alesha; Iverson, Louise; Gryparis, Zoe Subject: Symposium 2016 Update: Growing Food for Growing Cities Importance: High Dear Advisory Group: Good morning! We just announced our full Symposium<https://www.thechicagocouncil.org/event/global-food-security-symposium-2016> speaker line-up and latest working agenda (attached). We are very much looking forward to your participation, and as you know, we will handle your registration and travel arrangements. Closer to the events, we will also share your customized logistics sheets, along with Advisory Group materials. Exciting Symposium Details o We have secured 34 dynamic speakers and exciting innovators, among them Tony O. Elumelu, chairman of Heirs Holding and founder of the Tony Elumelu Foundation; and Senators Amy Klobuchar (D-MN) and Jack Reed (D-RI). We are finalizing 2-3 more panelists, along with additional Congressional and other speakers for our Congressional Preview and Private Forum Dinner on April 25. Details to follow soon. o 24 diverse global partners are involved and our sponsors include: Abbott (Lead Sponsor), Cargill (Supporting), DuPont, Land O'Lakes and RTI (Next Generation). Foundation Support: The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and The Stuart Family Foundation (sponsoring our Report). o We also received tremendous interest in our call for applicants to take part in our Next Generation Delegation<https://www.thechicagocouncil.org/event/global-food-security-symposium-2016>, with over 400 applicants from 62 countries representing 172 Universities. Our 19 member Delegation, represents 19 universities (10 land grants, 3 Ivy's, 4 private institutions, and 2 international universities), 8 nationalities (British, Chinese, German, dual Honduran, Indian, Kenyan, Nigerian, Rwandan), and are at various stages of their education (9 PhD candidates, 5 Master's students, 5 undergraduates). An additional 16 outstanding students were selected as Social Media Ambassadors to engage with the Symposium via social media and the live stream. (Full Bios attached) o At the Symposium, Roger Thurow will debut his book, The First 1,000 Days: A Crucial Time for Mothers and Children-And the World<http://www.amazon.com/First-000-Days-Crucial-Children%C2%97/dp/1610395859/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1453316478&sr=8-1&keywords=roger+thurow+1000+days>, and advance copies will be available on site for purchase. There is tremendous buzz already, and we are delighted to showcase Roger's efforts and the critical importance of good nutrition in the first 1,000 days for lifelong potential and growth. o The size of this year's event will be similar to last year's, approximately 400-420 multi-disciplinary stakeholders, to allow for greater audience engagement and discussion. We've also incorporated your feedback and reduced panel size, to maximize discussion and audience engagement. We have also been heavily promoting our livestream and social media, with the help of our global partners, and expect to have more robust social media engagement. o Lastly, we've decided to showcase our innovators following each panel as "Emerging Solutions". They will highlight the work or technologies they are leading to address many of the challenges being discussed in their preceding panels. We wanted to frame these "Emerging Solutions" as opportunities to meet many of these challenges, and highlight their work, growth potential and scale.
