Last week, Republican Sen. Jeff Flake announced that he will not be seeking re-election next year, citing the corrosive, degrading forces that have invaded his party as his reason for bowing out.

Sen. Flake and I rarely agree on policy, but I count him as a close friend and an honorable colleague - someone who's involved in public service for the right reasons. It is commendable that he had the courage to speak out about the precarious state of his party and our country from the center of the Senate floor.
