Truman National Security Project ! This month, Truman hosted a workshop for its Women, Peace, and Security Class and conducted Strategic Communications training for the American Council of Young Political Leaders. In addition, Truman’s TruDiversity Initiative has strengthened its partnership with Howard University through a speaker series, and Truman members shared their reflections in honor of Veterans Day.


Hansen Mak Hansen Mak enlisted in the U.S. Army and separated in 2008 at the rank of captain. After his military service, Mak was a Strategy and Operations Consultant with Deloitte before joining the federal government in 2010. He currently serves as a Building Partnership Capacity Program Manager at the Department of Defense, with oversight of European security cooperation programs, resources, partnership policies, strategy, and political-military affairs. He is a graduate of the Air War College, and holds an MBA from Webster University and BS from Norwich University.


Since his selection as a Defense Council Member in 2016, Mak has been active behind the scenes on ensuring that Truman advocates for principled national security solutions within the beltway and across the nation, especially during a presidential election year when voters need to be informed. He collaborated with other Truman members and the Obama Administration to organize and host the first ever National Forum for Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Military and Veterans Forum, which seeks to match Department of Defense and Department of Veteran Affairs leadership to military and veteran voices across the AAPI community. video highlighting the value of diversity among American patriots, and was selected as a Co-Director of the TruDiversity group. Moving forward, the initiative’s priorities will focus on increasing the pipeline of national security professionals and increasing the diversity amongst national security leaders. The TruDiversity leadership is currently working on a short and long range strategic plan that will guide the efforts and resources of the group.

Women, Peace, and Security Workshop

From 18 November to 19 November, 30 female members of the Truman community gathered in Washington, DC, for a workshop with generous support from the Compton Foundation.

The second annual Women, Peace, and Security workshop’s aim was to identify priorities in the new governing landscape and to determine how to influence policy as women in the national security community, with an eye towards change at the state and local level. The agenda included discussions and trainings on personal security for women in the public eye; communications trainings tailored to crafting your message as a woman in the current landscape; discussions on state-of-play on pressing policy issues that impact women at the state and local level; a review of races in 2017 and what they likely mean for female candidates in 2018 and 2020; and discussions on the impact of the passage of the Women, Peace, and Security Act of 2017.
Truman and Howard University
The TruDiversity Initiative, spearheaded by Truman staff and members, has continued its mission by working with Howard University, the initiative's first university partner, through their Political Science Department.

Truman members and Howard staff facilitated a speaker series this semester, talking to multiple classes—such as Constitutional Law, Intro to Black Politics, and Intro to Political Science—about the importance of diversity in national security as well as Truman’s work, membership, and professional development opportunities. Last year, the TruDiversity team worked with the Ralph Bunche International Affairs Center at Howard as an introduction to our worldview and values, and staff and members involved with the work are thrilled about the continued success and partnership.
Strategic Communications
On 15 November in Washington, DC, Truman staff conducted Strategic Communications training for almost 300 Professional Fellows from 44 countries at the American Council of Young Political Leaders’ Fall Congress.

The Congress marked the completion of a five to six week fellowship, in partnership with U.S. State Department Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, which was designed to help support the development of each fellow’s project, program, or organization to impact their respective communities. Following the Strategic Communications training, more than 15 Truman members and staff were on hand to provide coaching and give feedback to the Fellows as they presenting their project ideas. Project ideas included increasing tourism revenue to developing islands in Indonesia, improving gender equality in the Egyptian judicial system, and creating an Uber-style handyman service in Bangladesh. The coaches stressed the importance of personal narrative, confidence, concise delivery, passionate
speaking, and projecting leadership traits. This marks the fifth Congress that Truman has participated in.
Veterans Day Roundup
In honor of Veterans Day on 11 November, members of the Truman community who are veterans of the U.S. military reflected on their service and spoke out on important issues facing America today. In a

Save Iran nuclear deal; protect U.S. troops , by Ali Scotten, Truman Security Fellow

As troublesome as Tehran’s regional behavior is, an Iran with an imminent nuclear capability would make the situation much more dangerous for our service members.
