AC/DC’s Malcolm Young passed away this weekend at 64 due to complications from dementia. Along with his brother Angus, Malcolm was the founder of the Australian rock band that shook the world.

It’s hard for me not to smile when I think of AC/DC and Malcolm Young. I will never forget listening to their 1980 masterpiece “Back in Black” for the first time—my 12 year-old ears were forever changed. And listening to it today is still a revelation. It swings and moves like very few pieces of music ever created. It’s rhythms are unique. And Malcolm, the rhythm guitarist and co-writer of most of their songs deserves so much credit for the band’s powerful groove.

“Back in Black” opens with “Hell’s Bells,” a powerful, unforgettable song. But then it segues into “Shoot to Thrill” which has always been the show-stopper for me in an album chock full of hits. Back then, the sequencing of albums really mattered. A great deal of thought was put into the journey the listener would take from the time the needle dropped on vinyl, to flipping to the second side and through the closing number. In the case of “Back in Black,” the second side comes roaring in once again with the eponymous title track and closes with a dirge called “Rock and Roll Ain’t Noise Pollution.” Sequencing was so important then because it was a form of communication. It was part of the story. And back then rock and roll was how young people communicated with each other. This was before MTV, before the web and before CD’s. The stories that great albums told informed youth culture. In my neighborhood, if you didn’t understand “Back in Black” on some level, you really didn’t g
et it. But the cool thing about AC/DC was that everyone seemed to get it, or at least to enjoy it.

I could go on about the album. It’s a remarkable piece of art, including its stark, iconic black cover which inspired millions of t-shirts. AC/DC would never again record anything as profound as they did with “Back in Black.” But they didn’t have to. It didn’t matter. Decades later they would continue to sell out arenas and spread joy throughout the world. Watch Malcolm in this live clip from 1996, he’s the guy bopping along in the back with long hair. His brother Angus is really the front man, with his funky short pant suit and exaggerated Chuck Berry stomp.
