As I watched last Tuesday's election results, I was reminded that it was about a year ago that we made history together in Delaware.

While we have faced some incredible challenges, this I know for sure: It has been the honor of my life to serve you in Congress.

Through the past 365 days, we've made real progress. For instance:

-- I reached across the aisle and worked with Republicans and Democrats on a bill to help small businesses in underserved communities hire and grow through the SOAR Act.

-- I co-sponsored legislation to ban "bump stocks" -- the same device used in the terrible mass shooting in Las Vegas -- and help keep our friends, family, and neighbors safe from gun violence.

-- I fought back against attempts to dismantle the Affordable Care Act's vital protections for those with preexisting conditions, and I will continue to work in a bipartisan manner to improve our health care system.

But I don't need to tell you that our work is FAR from finished.

Just last week, Republican leaders in Congress released a tax plan that would cut tax rates for corporations and for billionaires, while ending deductions relied on by millions of middle-class families.

The mass shooting in Texas last weekend shows yet again that thoughts and prayers are not enough. We must take common-sense action to reduce gun violence.

Too many of my fellow Delawareans are caught up in the opioid crisis that is tearing apart town after town.

And we must come together to help Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands, Texas, Florida, and California recover from historic, climate-driven disasters.

I have another task that I’m taking very seriously. We need to maintain stability abroad, promote civility in our political discourse, and get to the whole truth about foreign interference in our elections and hold accountable EVERYONE involved.

A year ago, I could never have predicted the challenges we’d be facing. But I also couldn’t have imagined the outpouring of activism and engagement I’ve seen in Delaware and across the country that has and will continue to change this country for the better.
