Wednesday - October 13, 2010 From the School One Act Plays PosterIn case you hadn’t noticed, summer has departed and fall is officially here. . . as is the new theatre season at Sidwell Friends School! The One Acts, which kick off SFS’s Arts every autumn, have become famous for showing off the sophisticated theatrical acumen of our thespians and tech crews. Often black comedies, parodies or satires, these short plays offer hilarity beside worthy questions or ponderings which take risks with ideas about religion, business, social relationships and politics that we assume we have all figured out. . . until our student actors nudge us awake. This year’s offerings include a piano lesson without a piano (existentialist comedy?) and a Tennessee Williams’ menagerie that will shock you into laughter. Friday, October 15, and Saturday, October 16, at 8 p.m., and Sunday, October 17, at 2:30 p.m. Come for the conversation or come for the laughter or come for the art... but do come! Read MoreCommunity Service The October edition of the Upper School Community Service Newsletter is now available on the SFS website. Use this link to access the Community Service webpage. You will find the newsletter halfway down in the middle of the page. This newsletter highlights upcoming and recent community service events taking place at the Upper School. Please read this month’s publication if you would like to learn more, and/or get involved in the community service program at the Upper School. A Choral Invitation Now celebrating its 21st year, the annual Independent Schools Chorus Festival concert will be held at the National Cathedral on Wednesday, October 20th, at 8:00 p.m. 550 student singers from area independent school choruses (including Sidwell, Maret, Potomac, Landon, Holton-Arms, GDS, St. Albans, National Cathedral School and Bullis) perform one solo piece and then join together to perform four massed choral works. Admission is free and open to the public and, with the exception of administration from the independent schools, there is no reserved seating. We would be so honored for Sidwell families to join us on this evening to enjoy inspiring music and amazing student musicians in an awesome space!Events for Student Scholarships The Next-to-New Sale is just around the corner! Thursday, October 21 from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. (SFS families only) Friday, October 22 from 9:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. (public) Saturday, October 23 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. (public) Shop early for the best deals on housewares, clothes, sporting goods, holiday items, bikes, shoes, and much more! All proceeds directly benefit student financial aid. We still need volunteers to help price items and cashier during the sale : No experience necessary! It’s very easy and only requires the use of a calculator. If you are interested in helping, please contact Lauren Mulcahy.Quakerism 101 Please join Tom Farquhar as he gives an overview of and more in-depth understanding to the foundational principles that Sidwell Friends School is based on. Quaker values, Meeting for Worship and the associated Testimonies will be discussed. Tom will talk about Quakerism in general and, of course, some of its applications here at school. All are welcome on Tuesday, October 19, at 7p.m. in the Lower School Quaker Meetinghouse. Grand Opening of the Movement Studio Please come and help us inaugurate our new Movement Studio, which is both big and beautiful. We will be able to really spread out and leap high here! To celebrate this year’s new student initiatives within our greater campus visibility, we will host Studio Grand Opening performances on October 27th at 4:30 and 7 p.m. This event will bring together all movement and dance students grades 7 - 12. Be sure to invite your friends, family members and teachers. Plan to stay for potluck dinner too!Crew Team to Wash Your Car Old cars, new cars, used cars, they all need to be washed! The Sidwell Friends Crew Team will be running its Fall Carwash on Sunday, October 17 from 11 a.m.- 2 p.m. on the Upper School campus. Bring your car, buy a snack, and help the team with its most important fundraiser of the year. Rain or shine, your car will thank you!
