Wednesday, November 3, 2010 Alabama After unseating incumbent Attorney General Troy King (R) in the primary, GOP nominee Luther Strange defeated former State Ethics Committee Chair James Anderson. Strange drew endorsements from Republican officials such as Mitt Romney and Ken Cuccinelli to win 59%- 41%. Alaska Attorney General Daniel Sullivan (R) was appointed in June of 2009 by former Governor Sarah Palin (R). Last night Palin’s successor Governor Sean Parnell (R) defeated Democratic nominee Ethan Berkowitz (D) – ensuring Republicans will retain this appointed office. Arizona With 99% of precincts reporting State Superintendent Tom Horne leads Democratic Assistant Attorney General Felecia Rotellini (D) by a margin of 53% - 47% in the open seat battle to replace outgoing Attorney General Terry Goddard (D). Both candidates are veterans of narrow 2010 primary victories so this race is still too close to call. Arkansas Attorney General Dustin McDaniel (D) won a second term Tuesday with a win over Green Party candidate Rebekah Kennedy and write-in candidate Marc Rosson. California As of 2:00am Pacific time with just over 93% reporting Los Angeles County District Attorney Steve Cooley and San Francisco district attorney Kamala Harris (D) are separated by less than 30,000 votes (source: CA Sec of State website). This races remains too close to call. Colorado Incumbent Attorney General John Suthers (R) defeated Boulder County District Attorney Stan Garrett (D) 57% - 42% with 80% of precincts reporting. Iowa Veteran Attorney General Tom Miller (D) turned back a well-funded GOP challenge to win an 8thterm as Iowa’s Attorney General. Miller garnered 57% of the vote in an otherwise challenging year for Iowa Democrats. Kansas Attorney General Steve Six (D) was defeated after a close and hard fought battle with State Senate Majority Leader Derek Schmidt (R). Kansas Republicans swept all three statewide offices and Schmidt praised Six for “restoring stability” to the office of attorney general after his appointment in 2008. Maine The Maine General Assembly elects the Attorney General every 2 years. The Republicans took slim majorities in both chambers of the General Assembly in yesterday’s elections. The General Assembly will vote the first week of December to elect the Attorney General. It is too soon to tell what that result will be. Maryland Attorney General Doug Gansler (D) won reelection to a second term in Maryland. Massachusetts Attorney General Martha Coakley (D) handily defeated a write-in challenge from Republican James McKenna to win a second term as Massachusetts’ top law enforcement official. Michigan In the open seat race to succeed Attorney General Mike Cox (R) Genesee County Prosecutor David Leyton (D) fell to former Judge Bill Schuette (R) 54% to 42% in a Republican sweep of statewide offices.
